“He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief…

- Because of His great and perfect love for humanity, Jesus knew sorrow and grief at the deepest level. And yet we find New Testament passages that show Him rejoicing and being thankful. I think the reason for that is because the sorrow He expressed was not for Himself, but for others. He saw His creation as sheep without a shepherd, weary and heavy burdened, deceived, and without hope.
I wonder how much of our sorrow is nothing more than a form of self pity, and how much is truly for the lost, the broken, and the hopeless??
I encourage you, on this Good Friday to read all of Isaiah 53 with an open heart and the Holy Spirit’s help. The Bible calls Jesus followers the light of the world, Christ’s ambassadors, the salt of the earth. Be that today! Reach out to those you know and care about who are far from God. Invite them to service this Resurrection Sunday that they might hear the gospel message, which still has the power to transform lives.

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭53‬:‭3‬ ‭NKJV‬

“My soul clings to the dust;
- The psalmist seems to be experiencing a sense of loss of life, or rather a failure of truly living.
- This is either a result of acknowledging carnal (sin nature) living and being grieved by it (Roman 7);
Or feeling the weight of afflictions, trials, and difficulties of this life. Whichever it may be, we see His response in the next part of the verse…

Revive me according to Your word.”
- Here is the first of many where you find the phrase “according to Your word,” in psalm 119. It is a perfect example of how prayer and the Word of God are joined together. Jesus said in John 6, “the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
And the Christian has a promise in James 4 that if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us.
Let us go to God, by His word, in prayer, and be revived in His presence.

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119‬:‭25‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭25‬:‭28‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Self control, which is a fruit of the Spirit, serves as a line of defense that keeps us from responding with a foolish or dangerous emotional reaction to every discomfort or offense in life.
Galatians 5:24-25

“Deal bountifully with Your servant, That I may live and keep Your word.

- Though a servant, the psalmist ask for much because he has great expectation of a Great God. Christians too, in humility, should ask and expect much from God ( 2 Peter 1:3 ; Romans 8:32).
- The purpose of such a request is not motivated by self indulgence, but rather to be an example of loving obedience in a fallen world.

Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law.”

- This desire for the truths of God’s word to be uncovered and revealed seems to be more accessible to New Testament believers. Hebrews teaches us the veil is removed, John’s gospel tells us the Holy Spirit will teach us all things, and so on. All this after the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.
May we never grow weary or lose interest in the pursuit of discovering the truths found in God’s holy word. What a privilege it is to be a New Testament Christian.

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119‬:‭17‬-‭18‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭16‬:‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Whether it be human instinct or just great desire for certain things in our lives , we tend to have a strong tendency to justify ourselves and view our own ways as good, right, and pure. And as a result many times are scales are tipped (off balance. )
Only God’s weights and measures are sure and trustworthy. And although our feelings matter to God, they come at a distant second when compared to His will for our life. His way may not always feel pleasant but it is right.

“The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭138‬:‭8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Such confidence and hope comes only from one who has consistently spent quality time alone with the Lord.
In times of blessing and victory, he has gone to Him in prayer.
In times of crisis and defeat, he has gone to Him in prayer.
And in His presence, he has found himself a constant recipient of God’s endless grace and mercy.
(Phil 1:6 & Rom 5:5)

“His creating hands formed our souls at the beginning; His nail-pierced hands redeemed them on Calvary; His glorified hands will hold our souls fast and not let them go for ever.”

“If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭130‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

I have never been more vile, more backstabbing, more perverted, or more disgusting towards anyone than I have been with God.
And I have never known anyone more willing and more ready to offer forgiveness than God.
And now, as a recipient of His forgiveness, a holy reverence and loving obedience seems to be the only appropriate response.
Holy Spirit, help me to do so as long as I live.
