You know what God called you to do, and you have been running. Maybe you’ve been running for weeks, years. Maybe it has been so long that you’ve almost convinced yourself the calling was never real. I want you to know: the word of the Lord is about to come to you the second time!

But even when you have temporarily left the category of the righteous by your own choices, God has not averted His gaze. He sees you a great way off. He sees you before you see yourself coming back. He RAN to him.

Three words. Let them wash over you. The second time. God did not cancel Jonah. God did not replace Jonah. God did not go find a more reliable prophet who had never run from his calling. God came back — to the same man, with the same message, and gave him the same assignment.

Whatever cancer, whatever depression, whatever bo***ge, whatever sickness is trying to claim your body or your mind, there is healing in those stripes. Every lash that landed on the back of Jesus was a deposit toward your healing.

The night before Calvary, in a garden called Gethsemane, Jesus knelt under olive trees and prayed until His sweat became blood. Before a single Roman soldier ever struck Him, before the scourge, before the thorns and the nails, the blood of Jesus was already beginning to flow.

After he had pulled the drowning man from the truck, after he had carried him to shore, he turned right around and dove back into the water. Why? In his own words, he wanted to “verify no other passengers were in the vehicle.” He was not satisfied to save one. Neither is Jesus!

While that Marine’s courage is worthy of every honor a grateful nation can give him, that scene at the Del Mar Boat Basin is only a faint reflection—a shadow, a whisper—of something far greater that happened on a hill called Calvary two thousand years ago. We were the ones trapped. We were the ones drowning. We were the ones locked inside a cab of sin we could not break out of on our own. The water was rising. Judgment was certain. And then Jesus heard the splash. He saw our condition. And He did not hesitate.
