Teach Me Your Ways, O Yahveh
Psalm 129: 33-34
Teach me, O Yahveh, the way of Your statutes, and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your Torah, yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.”
This morning, as I walked through the garden with the Father in the stillness of the morning, my thoughts turned toward the life He has called us to live.
I thought about the gifts He bestows upon us, the anointing He calls us to operate in, and the obedience He desires us to walk in. I reflected upon His appointed times, His instructions, and the order He established for His people—not as burdens, but as invitations to draw nearer to Him.
And one question settled heavily upon my heart:
Am I walking according to what Yahveh has commanded, or merely according to what I have always been taught?
When Tradition Becomes Our Standard
Tradition can become so familiar that we stop examining it.
Things can be handed down from generation to generation until we accept them without ever opening the Scriptures and asking, “Father, is this truly what You commanded?”
Culture has traditions.
Families have traditions.
And religion has traditions.
Tradition itself is not necessarily wrong. But no tradition should ever be permitted to stand above the Word of Yahveh.
My desire is not to force my convictions upon another person. My desire is to encourage people to open their eyes, search the Scriptures for themselves, and seek Yahveh with their whole heart.
There is a difference between practicing religion and walking in obedience to the One we say we love.
Yeshua said:
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
— John 14:15
Those words reveal something powerful about obedience.
Obedience is an expression of love.
When we understand this, His commandments stop appearing as restrictions designed to keep something from us. Instead, we begin seeing His instructions as part of a relationship that draws us closer to Him.
His ways teach us how to walk with Him.
These Are My Feasts
Yahveh declared:
“Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of Yahveh, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are My feasts.”
— Leviticus 23:2
Notice what Yahveh says:
“These are My feasts.”
They belong to Him.
His appointed times are not merely dates on a calendar, ancient customs to study, or rituals to perform. They continually turn our attention toward the Father.
They remind us who He is.
They remind us who we are.
And they remind us whose authority governs our lives.
Our days belong to Him.
Our seasons belong to Him.
Our worship belongs to Him.
Our families belong to Him.
Our work belongs to Him.
Our calling belongs to Him.
Our very lives belong to Him.
The rhythms of this world do not have the authority to determine how the people of Yahveh should walk. That authority belongs to the Father and is revealed through His Word.
Father, Show Me Your Ways
Something begins to change when we approach Scripture with a heart that says:
“Father, show me Your ways rather than simply confirming mine.”
We begin choosing truth instead of comfort.
Obedience instead of convenience.
His Word instead of tradition.
His approval instead of man’s acceptance.
And intimacy instead of empty religion.
That kind of prayer can be costly because Yahveh may show us things that challenge what we have believed for years.
He may confront traditions we love.
He may expose areas we have never surrendered.
He may require us to stand differently from those around us.
But if we truly desire truth, we must be willing to follow wherever His Word leads.
The question cannot merely be, “What have I always believed?”
The question must become:
“What has Yahveh spoken?”
Obedience Changes the Man
The more I seek to walk according to His ways, the more I realize what a blessing obedience truly is.
It draws me closer to Him.
It deepens my understanding of His character and His Word.
It teaches me to recognize His voice more clearly.
It reveals areas of my life that still need to be surrendered.
And little by little, obedience forms me into the man He has called me to become.
But that transformation does not stop with me.
Walking closely with the Father helps me become a better husband.
A better father.
A better grandfather.
A better pastor.
A better servant.
A better man.
Because when Yahveh brings a man’s life into His order, that order begins touching everything entrusted to him.
A man’s obedience affects his marriage.
His children.
His grandchildren.
His congregation.
His friendships.
His decisions.
His testimony.
His legacy.
We were never called merely to know the truth.
We were called to walk in it.
There Is More
There is also a beautiful fellowship that develops among people who hunger for Yahveh in this way.
They are not satisfied merely knowing about Him.
They want to know Him.
They want to walk with Him.
They want to obey His Word.
They want His truth to shape every part of their lives.
And there is always more.
More of Him to discover.
More truth to understand.
More flesh to surrender.
More obedience to walk in.
More love to demonstrate.
More of His character to reflect.
And greater depths of relationship with the Father awaiting those willing to seek Him.
We should never reach the place where we believe we have arrived.
Our prayer should continually be:
“Teach me, O Yahveh, the way of Your statutes.”
A Prayer of Surrender
Father, remove from me anything I believe merely because it was handed down to me.
Give me eyes to see Your truth, ears to hear Your voice, and a heart willing to obey You regardless of the cost.
Teach me Your appointed ways.
Give me understanding of Your Torah and Your Word. Help me walk faithfully in the gifts and anointing You have placed upon my life.
Reveal anything within me that is tradition without truth, knowledge without obedience, or religion without relationship.
Form me into the husband, father, grandfather, pastor, servant, and man You created me to be.
Let my obedience never become empty religion. Let it always flow from my love for You.
And as I walk with You, let my life quietly point others toward Your truth.
In the name of Yeshua, amen.
Reflection
Ask yourself today:
Am I walking according to what Yahveh has commanded, or merely according to what I have always been taught?
Do not be afraid of that question.
Open His Word.
Search the Scriptures.
Seek Him sincerely.
Ask Him for understanding.
And then have the courage to obey what He reveals.
May we never be satisfied simply because something is accepted by the world, our culture, or even our religious traditions.
May we hunger to know what Yahveh has spoken.
And when He shows us His way, may our answer be:
“Yes, Father. I will walk in it.”
Because obedience is not merely something we give Yahveh.
Obedience is one of the places where we learn to walk with Him.
