Oasis Community Church

Oasis Community Church Oasis Community consists of people from all stations and backgrounds of life. We're a daughter church Far too many in this world are weary and discouraged.

Many desire encouragement, life and authenticity. Oasis Community seeks to speak to these needs through the life-changing message of hope found in our Lord Jesus. As an oasis offers renewal in the midst of a dry land, so this group of believers offers hope to those on life's journey through an ever-growing commitment to the Lord, ever-deepening relationships with each other, and an ever-extending

touch to those still thirsty and seeking. If you find yourself yearning for something deeper, something real, join us as we lock arms and press on to finish together well. We are sojourners still struggling... but struggling together, with Jesus as our Guide. For His glory!

Next Sunday will be our final Sunday gathering as Oasis Community Church. We believe that God has called us to be good stewards of the people and resources that he has entrusted to us. Since he has not allowed us to grow the way that we hoped, we believe that allowing him to redistribute us into other works is the best path forward in remaining faithful to him. This does not mean that Oasis is a failure or that we wasted our time. God has done some amazing things over the last seven years. To celebrate what he has done, consider sharing with us this Sunday how God has blessed you through our ministry together.

John 19:28 “After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), ‘I thirst.’”

Out of all of the sayings of the cross, “I thirst” might be perhaps the strangest upon first reading. We might wonder why we need to know that Jesus was thirsty. John points out that Jesus was fulfilling Scripture when he declared his thirst from the cross (see Psalm 69:21). But is there anything else going on with Jesus’ statement? I think there is.

First, Jesus being thirsty reminds us that Jesus is truly human. As any human hanging in the sun would be parched, so too Jesus, as a human, would be incredibly thirsty. We are reminded that Jesus thirsts because he is one of us. Only a human being could take our place on the cross.

Secondly, it isn’t only the midday sun that is causing Jesus’ thirst. John points out that Jesus said he thirsted AFTER knowing that all was finished. What was it that was finished? Jesus’ suffering for our sin. As Christ hung on the cross, God poured out all of the hell that we deserved on to him. He experienced the totality of the white-hot wrath of God. So yeah, he was thirsty!

What a marvel that God would become one of us and suffer in our place! As you fast today, thank God for the amazing sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf.

To help you seek God as you fast today, take a look at this devotional by Kari Pel:

John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."

In today’s reading, we continue listening to Jesus’ last words with His disciples just before He was arrested and crucified. Chapters 13 through 17 of John record Jesus’ last conversation with His disciples and His beautiful prayer just prior to His arrest.

As you read through John 15, try to imagine the scene. Jesus and His disciples have just observed Passover together, and now they are making their way to Gethsemane. As they walk along, Jesus points to a vine. He may have even held the fruitful vine in His hand as He describes how the branches can only produce fruit when they are connected to the vine. Perhaps he tore a branch off and threw it to the ground to illustrate that a branch disconnected from the vine can no longer produce fruit; it can do nothing.

Jesus uses a beautiful word to describe this connection: abide. To abide means to remain, to sojourn, to continue to be present. Jesus knew that in a short while He was no longer going to be walking the earth with His disciples physically. But that didn’t mean the relationship would be over. Just as a branch must stay connected to the vine to live, so His disciples must continue to abide with Jesus- to abide in His love, to abide in His teaching, to not go searching for other vines because Jesus is the only true vine.

As you fast and pray today, take the time to abide- to be present with Jesus. Thank Him for abiding in You. Thank Him for the fruit He has already produced in your life. And thank Him for the fruit yet to come, as you continue to abide and walk with Him. As a church family, let’s commit together to abide in Jesus, knowing that apart from Him, we can do nothing.

Our reading today comes from John 11:28-57. As you fast today, check out this great devotional from Kari Pel:
Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” (John 11: 40)
In today’s reading, we see a miracle. And an amazing miracle at that. Lazarus had been dead for four days. He had been laid in his tomb and the tomb had been secured. The process of grieving had begun. When Jesus arrived on the scene, it did not appear to anyone that anything else could be done. The first words from both Martha and Mary, Lazarus’ sisters, when they first encountered Jesus was, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (v.21, v.32) But Jesus was about to perform a miracle that no one expected. He called Lazarus from the tomb, and he walked out alive!
Place yourself in that scene for a moment. Can you even imagine? In the midst of grieving the loss of someone you love dearly, all of a sudden- they are alive! It’s a miracle! To God be the glory!
But not everyone reacted that way. There is an intriguing connection between belief and God’s glory that we don’t want to miss. Back in John 11: 4, Jesus said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be gloried through it.” As Jesus was praying before calling Lazarus from the tomb he said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” (John 11: 41-42) After seeing Lazarus raised from the dead, one group of people gave glory to God and believed in Jesus. The other group reported the incident to the Pharisees and the plot to arrest and kill Jesus was put into motion.
God’s glory was there all along. It wasn’t dependent on anyone’s belief. However, only those who believed saw God’s glory. The others missed it. As you fast and pray today, ask God to reveal His glory to you. Ask Him to show you how He is moving in the midst of Oasis. Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?

Our reading for the day comes from John 6:1-21. In the first part of these verses we read about the feeding of the five thousand where Jesus miraculously feeds crowds of people who had followed him out into the hills after seeing the many signs that he was performing.

Now, Jesus could have simply performed this miracle without any aid from his disciples, but that is not what he does. Jesus loves to include us in the things that he is doing. So, he asks them where they can pick up some food for the people. They are incredulous over Jesus’ question. They don’t have the resources to buy food for so many people. All they had was a sack lunch from some kid that was with them. Jesus takes their meager rations and somehow feeds thousands of people.

Today Jesus is interested in demonstrating his power through his people. Yes, Jesus could win our cities without us, but he has chosen to use the church to minister to those who are lost and hurting. Like the disciples, we frequently make excuses about the mission that Jesus has called us to: we don’t have enough money, we don’t have enough gifting, we don’t have enough people, etc. But Jesus does not need much to do something extraordinary.

Today as you fast, consider what resources you have that could be used for the sake of God’s kingdom. Pray that God would use you and what little you have to do something amazing for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In our reading today from the gospel of John, we encounter the first of Jesus’ signs, turning water into wine. It is a well-known story, but not everyone realizes just what Jesus is doing.

Nothing that Jesus does is without purpose. Jesus intentionally has the servants fill these jars normally used for Jewish purification in order that they might represent the Old covenantal system of laws. In other words, Jesus is replacing the water of the old ways with the wine of the new age. The Messianic age was symbolically described by the Old Testament prophets as a time when wine would flow liberally in the land of Israel (see Joel 3:18, Amos 9:13, Jeremiah 31:12). Together, these jars held about 150 gallons of wine, pretty liberal for a wedding! In this miracle, Jesus is inviting his disciples to see that they are on the edge of this new age.

The wine that Jesus provides isn’t simply better than the water. It is better than all other wine. The head waiter of the party is amazed by how good it is. Most people bring out the watered-down stuff later in the party, since by that time people are probably buzzing too much to notice. But the wine that Jesus provides is richer and fuller, superior in every way. Jesus brings better wine. He makes the celebration better.

As disciples of Jesus, we have been made citizens of this new age. We have been invited in to celebrate with the Messiah. As such, Christians ought to be the life of every party. Why? Because we have more reasons to celebrate than anyone else.

As you pray today, as that God would help you embody the kind of joy that is appropriate for a citizen of the Messianic age. Pray that others would be able to see in your life that Jesus brings better wine than anything this world offers.
