With a difficult mix of extreme sadness and extreme joy, I want you to know that founder of the "Carpenter's Union", Michael James Stanfield, left this earth today to be joined with his Heavenly Father after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer. I (Bruce Chambers) have added some photos of Mike and his "kids" (members of his 1972-75 youth group, the Carpenter's Union) to this post. Many of these images were either taken or orchestrated by Mike. His obituary is in the comments below. His memorial will be held Monday, May 14th, at 3pm, in the First Baptist Church of Hallsville, Texas. Please feel free to add your comments and photos to this post as a memorial for the our beloved Mike.

For two years my youth pastor, Mike Stanfield, has battled cancer, in order to be there for his family and to be a blessing to his friends. Initially I called to comfort him but he did most of the comforting with wit and humor. Today his daughter Amy told me that Mike has made the courageous decision to enter hospice and stop the battle after a series of serious health challenges. He is ready to go home despite us not wanting that just yet. Please pray that he is comfortable and finishes well. God bless you my friend.

Another image from the Carpenter's Union scrapbook. This is part of the audience for a live concert of the "Second Chapter of Acts" music group, put on in the garth of First Presbyterian Church if Anaheim. The Second Chapter of Acts were a big name Christian Band at the time and our youth group raised funds through a paper drive to fund their performance fee. It was the biggest band we ever booked. They were great but our crowd was kind of small. I see a lot of familiar faces in the image from probably 1973 (maybe 74), including the love of my life, Carole Schaffer Chambers. — with Carole Schaffer Chambers, Marcie Reil, Dianne Deming, Susan Brewer and Margo Stewart.

OK Carpenter Union members, help me out here. This is obviously a beach visit in the early 1970s. It looked like Huntington Beach in the other photos, with Mike Stanfield, seated, leading the group in a fire pit visit to the beach. I see Marcie Reil, Dianne Deming, Judy Knudsen, John MacAleese, and one of the Asher sisters? Who do you recognize and do you have contact with any who aren't connected on FB?

Just when I thought I had hit nearly the end of photographic history on the Carpenter's Union I found a notebook in a box in the rafters of my garage. I don't believe I took any of these images, only taking images later. Mike Stanfield likely took these images himself. Eventually he handed me the camera and the notebooks for safe keeping since I seemed to be taking an interest in photography. This is a virtual treasure trove for me. I'll start adding a image a day because I really want you to savor these images. Here's one of the best images of all.

Had my first phone call with Pat Tiller today in over 40 years - this reunion thing is a great idea! Join in! Remember the limp finger peace sign with the greeting of Grace Mercy and Peace in Greek? Talk about geeks!

While I was at Mike's he had a group (about 300 people) photo of our Youth Leadership Camp to Forest Home. I remember that trip well and it was there that John Emery talked me into dating the young Carole Schaffer. Sorry for the focus but I did my best with a point and shoot on a curly photo under the Stanfield's kitchen lights.

I had a fabulous weekend in Northeast Texas, visiting with Mike and Ann Stanfield, their daughter Amy Doron, and son-in-law Anthony Doron (off to work when we took these photos as I was leaving). All who know Mike will be glad to hear that he is the same loving, kind, and slightly crazy man we all grew to love decades ago. He and I swapped four decades of life stories. He was as creative, brilliant, and ingenious as you can be in all his ministry and career. I joked with him that he embodied the Mickey Rooney character that always wanted to get a barn and put on a play. He transformed his community with its own radio station, top of line digital schools, youth ministries, and touched lives through out his life. Now he's working hard to stay healthy and be there for his family, so if he comes to mind please pray for his health and a blessing for his positive attitude toward adversity and putting other's first. Ann was the sweetest and attentive host and Anthony and Amy kept us moving and experiencing the community. The family laughs together, at themselves, and is accepting of those they encounter right where people are.
