Today is Juneteenth, commemorating the arrival of Major Gordon Granger in Galveston Texas informing slaves that the Emancipation Proclamation has been signed and that they were free. Major Granger came to Texas two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Think about this for a minute. These slaves had lived as slaves for TWO YEARS not knowing they were free. History tells us that some slave owners knew of the signing of the emancipation but kept it from the freed slaves in order to work them in the next harvest. Sadly, many today still act like they don’t know that we are free and many TREAT US like we aren’t supposed to be free. As we celebrate Juneteenth let us not only celebrate but let us reflect and commit to not live like we don’t know we are free.
