The son of my colleague at Chabad On Campus in Texas. A brave young man indeed! May he have a speedy and complete recovery!

Leibel Lazaroff came to Australia with a heart focused on service. The 20-year-old from Texas had arrived just weeks earlier to volunteer alongside a rabbi and support the local Jewish community during a Hanukkah gathering in Bondi. What was meant to be a peaceful evening suddenly became a moment of fear and urgency.

As confusion spread and people rushed to find safety, Leibel moved toward someone in need. He noticed an Australian police officer badly injured and struggling. Without hesitation, Leibel ran to help. He removed his own shirt and used it to support the officer, staying by his side and doing everything he could to keep him stable.

Those nearby said Leibel remained calm and focused under extreme pressure. Drawing on the discipline and awareness he had developed growing up in Texas, he tried to guide and encourage the officer through the chaos. While helping others, Leibel himself was seriously hurt.

Even after being injured, Leibel fought to stay conscious. He held himself together until others were able to step in and help. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and underwent multiple surgeries. Doctors later said it was remarkable that he survived.

Leibel is now awake and able to speak, though his recovery will be long and challenging. His family says he came to Australia to spread kindness and light — and that is exactly what he did when it mattered most.

Please keep Leibel Lazaroff in your thoughts and prayers as he continues to heal.
