Colored by the Spirit Technically they are called eastern red spotted newts. As juveniles (efts) the red spotted newt, also sometimes known as the fire newt, is a bright red color. As juveniles when they are this bright red color, they can be found on moist forest floors among leaf litter. As adults, they retreat back to small bodies of water and

lose their red color becoming green. If you venture into the woods of the northeast right now, you have a chance of seeing them. And I think this serves as a great reminder of Pentecost, of the fire of the Holy Spirit. As the color of this little newt serves as an alert to would be predators, so our color should send out an alert to the world! We are a people fired by a vision, a passion for a world which can reflect God’s love and compassion. Unlike the newt, I pray our color will not dim as we age. Rather, as the prophecy of Joel declared and was proclaimed at Pentecost, the fire of the Holy Spirit will be present and renewed throughout our lives. So no matter our age or the season the vitality of the Spirit will be seen and heard in our prophesies, dreams, and visions proclaimed to the world through the color of our lives - our words, our ways, our thoughts, and our actions.

Feasting on the Word links us to an ancient Christian discipline of meditating on God’s word. It employs a small passage of scripture read four times in four different translations interspersed with silence to engage with scripture more deeply. This devotional act lets God’s word speak to us. It is a great meditative practice which only requires a little bit of time!

Today’s passage is Psalm 139:7-12.
