For those planning to attend Trinity Church this morning, after receiving reports from church members about the road conditions around the area, the elders have decided to cancel the service for this morning.
Stay home, stay safe, stay warm! We look forward to seeing you next week.
Together in his grace,

1000s - Anselm (pastor in England, wrote Cur Deus Homo - "Why God became Man")

Grant, Lord Jesus,
that we may hold to you without parting,
worship you without wearying,
serve you without failing;
faithfully seek you,
happily find you,
and forever possess you,
the only God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
blessed now and forever, Amen.

900s - Gregory of Narek
(Armenian poet)

Lord God,
doer of good,
generous King,
refuge of life,
spacious place of rest,
who came for the sake of sinners like me.

You took the form of man
and accomplished things beyond our words to express.

You performed miracles,
even perfecting our humanity
with the fullness of your divinity.

And you set apart for yourself a people--
anointed by your Holy Spirit--
whose praises I have sung as much as I could
for your glory,
Lord of all.

Have mercy upon me in the memory of these, your chosen. Amen.

800s - Dionysius Telmaharensis -مار ديونيسيوس التلمحري (Syrian historian & pastor - during stressful times of political conflict, he worked for peace-- not watering down differences but proclaiming the gospel of the Son who loved his enemies)

O God the Father, Good beyond all good,
lovely beyond all that is lovely,
in You there is calmness, peace and harmony.

End the arguments that divide us from each other,
and bring us back to a unity of love,
which will bear some likeness to your divine Triune nature.

As You are in charge of all things, bring us to an undivided goodness,
so that, through the embrace of love and in the ties of friendship,
we may be one in the Spirit.

Through the grace, the mercy, and the tenderness of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen

743 – Leoba, Boniface’s younger cousin, also a missionary to Germany. This prayer is from three prayers in her letters.

Lord Jesus Christ, you are the mighty Judge. You created everything.
You shine forth in splendor, reigning in your Father’s kingdom,
through the Spirit’s ongoing fire, burning glorious forever.
Keep us from harm—as you promised--now and always.
Knit the bonds of true love within your people.
Protect us from the poison-darts of the hidden enemy.
We pray this, O Christ—our Creator and Redeemer—
until we see you without confusion
on the day of when evil is judged
and all is put right. Amen

400s: Augustine - Converted later in life/discipled under Ambrose. Became one of the greatest theologians of the Church. (from Confessions)

Late have I loved you, O Beauty so ancient, so new.
Too late have I loved you!
I ran after the lovely things you have made—I crazy, I unlovely.
You were with me, and I was not with you.

You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness.
You shone, you blazed, and you banished my blindness.
You breathed your fragrance on me, and I have breathed it in, and now I long for you.
You made us for yourself, O Lord.
And our hearts are restless until they rest in You. …

Let me seek you, Lord, by calling on you,
And let me call on you, believing in You
because of the Word that's been preached to me. Amen.

600s – Wynfrid, nicknamed “Boniface”, missionary to the Germans/Dutch, chopped down Thor's tree, martyred by Friesian warriors at Dokkum. This prayer is adapted from a sermon of Boniface.

O Lord, you have been our refuge in all generations.
May we stand fast in what is right.
Prepare our souls for trials.
We wait upon your strengthening aid.
We say to you “you are our refuge.”

Lord, your Church is like a great ship, being pounded by the waves of life’s trials.
May we do our duty—not to abandon the ship but to keep her on course.

Help us trust Him who has placed this burden upon us.
What we ourselves cannot bear, let us bear with the help of Christ.
For He is all-powerful, and He tells us:
'My yoke is easy, and my burden light.'

We thank you Lord,
in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

300s - This is a piece from the famous hymn-prayer, called TeDeum. It is traditionally attributed to Ambrose, pastor of Milan.

O God, You are alone God. We praise you!
O God, we applaud you! All creation cries aloud!
To you all angels, all the powers of heaven--
cherubim and seraphim-- worships in endless song:
'Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and Earth are full of your glory!'
The glorious choir of apostles praise you.
The beautiful company of prophets praise you.
The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.
Throughout the world the Holy Church confesses you –
Father, of infinite majesty,
Your true and only Son, worthy of all worship,
And the Holy Spirit, our advocate and guide...
We worship only You—world without end.
Keep us this day, O Lord, from sin.
O Lord, have mercy on us, have mercy.
O Lord, let your love fall upon us again, our trust is in You.
O Lord, in You alone is my hope: let me never be put to shame. Amen.

Our Story

Recognizing the influential role of the university in our society–and the world–Areopagus seeks to reflect the ongoing relevance of the Gospel and Christian worldview into all facets of life for the students, faculty, and staff of Iowa State University. Areopagus is a ministry of the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA), and brings a distinctly Reformed perspective to everything it does. We desire to see all peoples come to know the good news of Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God, and participate in God’s ongoing work in the world. We care deeply about the university and want to see it flourish. We care about creation and community. And we care about connecting people to the local church and participating in that covenant community.

Join us for one of our Bible studies, discussion groups, or student dinners. More information about the ministry, as well as our partnership with Trinity Christian Reformed Church, can be found at www.isu-areopagus.org.
