Before You Join a Choir, Understand This:

Joining a choir can be an amazing experience—but don't join with the wrong expectations.

A choir can help you grow musically, but the choir is not necessarily your personal vocal-training programme. Its main goal is to develop the ensemble: harmony, blending, timing, dynamics, interpretation, and performance.

Also, remember that your choir part doesn't always define your actual voice type. You may sing tenor in one arrangement and something different in another.

And being a great solo singer doesn't automatically make you a great choir singer.

Choir singing requires you to:

👉🏽 Listen to other voices

👉🏽 Maintain your own part

👉🏽 Sing in harmony

👉🏽 Control your volume

👉🏽 Blend with others

👉🏽 Receive correction

👉🏽 Learn and practice your music

👉🏽 Show up and honour your commitment

Most importantly, learn to blend, not just to be heard.

A choir isn't a competition to see who can sing the loudest. You're contributing to a collective sound.

So before you join a choir, ask yourself:

“Am I prepared for what being a chorister actually requires?”

Because joining a choir is easy.

But becoming a valuable choir member is the real work..✍🏽
