Today we mourn the passing of Pope Francis, and hold him and all the people of the world in the Light. Pope Francis used his platform to call for support for immigrants and refugees, for global disarmament, and for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid in Gaza. Last year, AFSC’s General Secretary Joyce Ajlouny had the opportunity to meet with Pope Francis at the Vatican (pictured above).

“He spent a lifetime standing up for displaced and oppressed people,” said Joyce Ajlouny. “At the Vatican, I thanked him for praying for peace in Gaza and in the world. He shared with me that he called the Catholic parish in Gaza every day and continues to pray for the freedom of Palestine.”

In his final public statement, Pope Francis wrote: “I think of the people of Gaza, and its Christian community in particular, where the terrible conflict continues to cause death and destruction and to create a dramatic and deplorable humanitarian situation. I appeal to the warring parties: call a ceasefire, release the hostages and come to the aid of a starving people that aspires to a future of peace!”

AFSC joins people around the world in marking the passing of Pope Francis. Let us all remain steadfast in our efforts to realize his vision for peace.

Book discussion January 26th after Worship.

A moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature, mythology, and the natural world, May's story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat.

Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times. May models an active acceptance of sadness and finds nourishment in deep retreat, joy in the hushed beauty of winter, and encouragement in understanding life as cyclical, not linear

“Who is the best listener in your life?” This question was recently offered by a Friend during a Sunday Meeting for Worship. Who is that person for you? To live as a beloved community, we must listen to each other with intention.

As we gather together with our families and friends during this upcoming holiday weekend, how can we listen more deeply and openly to those we will spend time with? How can we see the divine move through those with whom we surround ourselves?

We at Arch Street Quakers wish you joy and deep listening with your loved ones.

At 11 AM on Sunday November 24, following 10 AM Worship, we will gather at our wonderful tulip poplar which sprouted back in 1796 and is now selected as a member of the Upper Dublin Elder Grove.

Commissioner Donah Beale (Chair) and Commissioner Steve Hunter who spearheaded the project will say a few words about the Elder Grove fostered by the Upper Dublin Historic Commission. Author and historian Tom Keels who is writing the history of Upper Dublin Quaker Meeting will also share some remarks.

Two of the children in our community will tie a special ribbon around the tree created by one of our members who is a talented seamstress.

Refreshments to follow.
