A day of empowering and experiencing for Local Church/Certified Lay Servants (formerly Local Church/Certified Lay Speakers) &

Other disciples exploring & responding to God’s call on their life (i.e., you don’t have to be a Lay Servant to attend)

CLASSES OFFERED

BASIC COURSE – FULL DAY This course is foundational for all courses in Lay Servant Ministries. Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended and to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices, and being part of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship.

ADVANCED COURSES – FULL DAY (CHOOSE 1 COURSE) Participants of advanced courses should purchase applicable books and read the material before class. All of the books are available from Cokesbury, www.cokesbury.com

Dancing with Words by Ray Buckley. Participants in the course will learn what constitutes a good story, discover storytelling styles, learn the techniques of effective storytelling, and practice creating stories from their experiences. (Participant book – ISBN 13: 9780881774078)

Afire with God by Betsy Schwarzentraub. This course helps participants develop a holistic understanding of stewardship. (Participant book – ISBN-13: 9780881775204)

Transforming Evangelism by Henry Knight & Douglas Powe. This course leads participants to learn from John Wesley how to practice relational Evangelism. They will discover that evangelism involves not only sharing our faith with others but welcoming people into a community where they can grow in faith. (Participant book – ISBN-13: 9780881774856)

COURSE LEADERS

Karl Smith is a Certified Lay Minister and member of Kingswood UMC, with his wife Judy, a member of the staff. During Karl’s 20 years as a Certified Lay Speaker and stint as District Lay Servant Coordinator he has coordinated workshops and taught classes.

Shawn Stroud is a Certified Lay Servant, the Amarillo District Lay Servant Coordinator, a High School Sunday School Class Teacher, and co-leader of Youth with his wife, Melissa. He has been Lay Leader at Wesley UMC, Borger, for over ten years.

Dale West is a Certified Lay Minister and a member of First United Methodist Church in Pampa. He has served in his church in Pampa for over 30 years. In his role as a Certified Lay Minister, he filled the pulpit at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Pampa from January to August of 2015. He is currently back at FUMC serving as Lay Leader.

Nancy Biffle is a Certified Lay Servant and member of Polk St UMC with her husband, George, who is the director of music ministries. Nancy has taught classes for Lay Servant Ministries, substituted for pastors and been a speaker for UMW Sundays and women’s retreats.

Mark Pittman has taught stewardship classes for Lay Servant Ministries and served as the treasurer of the NWTX Conference. He currently serves on the Path One Committee of the NWTX Conference. Mark and his wife, Francie, a retired Diaconal Minister, are members of First UMC of Canyon.

WHO SHOULD COME?

All laity interested in developing leadership skills for their journey as a disciple. This is interactive training. Come prepared to participate!
All those willing to expand their borders.

All Lay Servants MUST complete a course every three (3) years to maintain your status (local or certified) as a Lay Servant. BoD ¶267.3, BoD ¶268.3d

Lay Servant Training on Wednesday Evenings this Fall
Kingswood United Methodist Church is offering two lay servant classes as part of their regular Wednesday night program.

Classes will be held at Kingswood UMC, 4801 S Austin, Amarillo, with classes beginning on Sept 16 and ending on Oct 28. There will NOT be a class on Oct 7. Class time is 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. They offer a meal at 6:00 p.m. for a donation.

The courses offered include:

the Basic Lay Servant Course, taught by Karl Smith, Certified Lay Minister. Course cost is $25, which includes the book.(This course is foundational for all courses in Lay Servant Ministries. an Advanced Course – Living our Beliefs – The United Methodist Way, taught by Rev Dr Brad Reeves, pastor of Kingswood UMC. Course cost is $15; participants will need to purchase their own book.(This course will explore the special gifts of theology, witness, and organization that The United Methodist Church brings to the church universal, how we got where we are today, and how our distinctive emphases are still needed in the 21st – century church. The Annual Amarillo District Conference and Pre-Annual
Conference Meeting will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2015, beginning at 5:30
p.m. with dinner and the meeting at 6:00 p.m., in the Garden Room
(Fellowship Hall) of First United Methodist Church in Borger, Texas (200 N.
McGee St.).

The agenda for the District Conference will include election of
Amarillo District Leaders and Officers, approval of the Amarillo District
Budget for 2016, and a report of activities within the District, both during
the past year and into the coming year. There will also be a time to
recognize all of the churches who paid 100% of their Shared Ministries in
2014.

The Pre-Annual Conference portion of the gathering will include
pertinent information about annual conference, including the process for the
election of both clergy and lay delegates to General Conference 2016, and
agenda items that will come before the annual conference for approval and
adoption. Annual Conference this year will be held in Lubbock, June 11-13.
