Mother Elizabeth L. Black, 76, formerly known as Sr. M. Bernadette, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2026, (Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ). Mother Elizabeth was a Consecrated Virgin of the Association of Christ the King, who celebrated fifty years of Religious Life. Mother Elizabeth was born in Santa Anna, TX on December 21, 1949 to Dr. Axel Johannes Black and Elizabeth May Zelley.

Rosary and a Prayer Vigil will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral, 1200 S. Washington, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 6 pm. Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 2 pm at the church, with Father Lawrence John presiding. Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery East, Garden of Resurrection. Funeral Services are provided by Schooler Funeral Home.

Mother Elizabeth received her B.A. from Eastern New Mexico University of Portales, and M. ED from Texas Tech University. She was a teacher and principal at St. John’s School, Borger, and St. Anthony’s School, Dalhart. Mother was the Regional Superior of the School Sisters of St. Francis, in Panhandle from 1992-2004 and, since its establishment in 2019, was the Moderator of the Assn. of Christ the King, Amarillo.

Mother Elizabeth was known for her deep spirituality, love for creation, compassion for the elderly, and her brilliant mind. Her soft-spoken ways won the hearts of all who knew her. A talented artist, Mother used her gift to paint beautiful scenery for school plays, portraits, and more recently, to paint materials used by the children in the atrium at St. Mary’s Cathedral School. Those close to her knew she had a great sense of humor. She lives in the memory of her students of long ago and was surprised with a gift of a guitar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, John and Tommy Black.

Mother Elizabeth is survived by her brother, Nick Black, his wife, Jaton, and their son, Thomas Black of Amarillo; Karen Black and her sons, Chris Black and Chad Black; nephews Lance and Vance Tucker, and numerous other relatives.

Mother Elizabeth is also survived by the members of the Association of Christ the King, Mother Florence J. Jones, Mother Angela Marie Ricigliano, and Mother Rita Ann L’Esperance.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to St. Mary’s Cathedral School, Amarillo.

Have you ever felt called to serve during Mass in a deeper way?

Our parish is inviting new ushers to join this important ministry of hospitality and welcome. Ushers are often the first friendly face people encounter when they come to church — helping others feel at home, cared for, and part of our parish family.

Whether you’ve been a parishioner for many years or are looking for a new way to become involved, we would love to invite you to prayerfully consider serving as an usher.

This ministry is more than helping with seating or collections — it is a ministry of kindness, presence, and service to God’s people.

If you are interested, please attend the usher training tonight at 6:30. We would love to welcome you and answer any questions you may have.

We invite our parish community to join in supporting Catholic education and helping our students reach their goal. Every gift, big or small, makes a difference!

Last night was our final youth night of the school year, and we dedicated it to celebrating and praying over our seniors as they prepare to begin a new chapter in life.

Congratulations to our 9 St. Mary’s seniors! We are so proud of the hard work, faith, leadership, and commitment you have shown through your involvement in youth ministry over the years. You have been a shining light in our community and an example of Christ’s love to others.

As you begin this next journey, always remember that St. Mary’s Cathedral will always be your home. We are praying for you and cannot wait to see all that God has planned for your future. 💙✨

St. Mary’s invites you to prayerfully consider joining our Usher Ministry. We are in urgent need of additional Ushers, especially at the 5:30 PM Mass, where we currently have only 4 volunteers, and the 8:00 AM Mass, where we have only 6.

Your help is essential to support the well-being of our faithful volunteers and to ensure the smooth flow and reverence of our liturgical celebrations. By serving as an Usher, you can make a meaningful difference in the life of our parish community.

We would be deeply grateful for your willingness to serve. Thank you for prayerfully considering this important ministry.

✨ First Holy Communion ✨

This morning, the children of St. Mary’s Cathedral received their First Holy Communion — a beautiful and sacred milestone in their faith journey.

With joyful hearts, they received Jesus in the Eucharist for the very first time. May this special day draw them closer to Christ and fill their lives with His grace and love.

Please join us in keeping these children in your prayers as they continue to grow in their relationship with the Lord. ✝️
