Significance of National Poinsettia Day
National Poinsettia Day commemorates the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett on December 12, 1851. Poinsett was an American botanist and the first U.S. Minister to Mexico, where he discovered the vibrant red plant known as the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) during his travels. Captivated by its beauty, he sent cuttings back to his greenhouse in South Carolina, where he began cultivating the plant. This act led to the poinsettia becoming a popular holiday decoration in the United States.
