Recently mailers went out with factual information about a specific candidate (our mailboxes have been full of these đ§đ«©) and one of his supporters cried out online that it was all lies. The problem is that it was not lies and it was not even a half truth.
Keep in mind that a half truth is a whole lie when used to prove a point, not exposing the whole truth. In the political arena this is also known as "spin," but is still a lie.
This particular fact had been reported on the required finance report, and further exposed in our local newspaper.
The problem here is known as "Confirmation Bias."
Confirmation Bias is people's tendency to process information by looking for, or interpreting, information that is consistent with their existing beliefs, and ignoring the truth and facts presented. Most often, even when confronted with facts, these people rarely investigate the issue, mostly out of fear of being wrong.
We have elected officials, political figures, spiritual advisors, and many times management or company leaders, that operate in confirmation bias. This will eventually impact everyone around them.
This is a very dangerous trend. We see people put into positions of leadership simply because we never question existing allegations or information. Eventually people get hurt, bad decisions are made, and devastation ensues.
Proverbs 12:19 tells us "Truthful words stand the test of time, but lies are soon exposed."
God will expose it eventually. He always wants us to walk in truth. If we believe a lie, and support the lie innocently, when God starts exposing it, then we are responsible.
If you operate in Confirmation Bias, you will be left in the dust. Embarrassed, damaged, possibly experiencing some sort of loss, and you will question everything.
Ignoring it will not make us innocent before God. Ignoring it makes us guilty and we will suffer consequences
Next time you see something about someone you respect or follow, and are shocked, dont ignore it. Investigate it. It may save your life.
I have a rule of three, taken from Deut. 17:6. If information comes to me the first time, I question. The second time, I pay attention and start digging. Three times? It's a confirmation and is probably true.
Be honest with yourself and ask God to show you where you may walk in confirmation bias. He will begin to show you, so take it seriously and watch Him rescue you.
