Weekly Devotion : No Greater Love Than This….
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13
This verse is the heart of Memorial Day’s meaning — a call to honor the ultimate sacrifice and to see it in both earthly and eternal contexts. Memorial Day began in Waterloo, New York, as a way to honor those who gave their lives in service to preserve the freedom, peace, and future of the nation. These men and women — soldiers, first responders, and others — laid down their lives so that we might live. Their courage, dedication, and willingness to risk everything for others is the living example of sacrificial love.
While we remember the heroes of our nation, the Bible points to a greater sacrifice: Jesus Christ. He gave His life not for a nation, but for all humanity, to set us free from sin, shame, and death. His death on the cross was the ultimate act of love — choosing to take the punishment we deserved so that we might have eternal life.
We all know that Freedom is never free. It comes at a cost — the blood, sweat, and tears of those who serve. But Jesus bought a greater freedom: freedom from sin and death, and the promise of eternal life.
But this message isn’t just about how we look at soldiers and service men and women… because, every one of us is called to lay down our lives. Every time we put another’s interests before our own, we are laying ourselves and our interests down for our friends—our brothers and our sisters in Christ. Selfishness and sacrifice cannot coexist. One will win out over the other and will be our motivation. And, if sacrifice loses, so does love.
Jesus tells his disciples: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”
So Memorial Day is not just a day of remembrance; it’s an invitation to love and serve others with the same selflessness and compassion that Jesus modeled. As believers, we are called to Honor those who gave their lives for our freedom. Thank God for the ultimate sacrifice of His Son. And live each day with gratitude, humility, and a heart to love and serve.
