Second Week of Advent — December 04, 2022
Prelude:
Greetings & Announcements:

Call to Worship: ***
A shoot has come forth from the stump of Jesse.
The spirit of the Lord rests upon his shoulders.
Wisdom guides his feet.
Righteousness is the belt around his waist.
Faithfulness is the mantle upon his shoulders.
Counsel and might cover his head.
A shoot has come forth from the stump of Jesse.
God’s promised salvation is at hand.

A Reading: “Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus”

Hymn: “Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus” #211

1. Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.
2. Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit,
raise us to thy glorious throne.

Our Unison Prayer:***
Mighty One, the spirit of the Lord rests upon your chosen one: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. As we behold your glory in the heavens, breathe your passion for justice into our hearts, that we may defend the poor, deliver the oppressed, and help the eary. In this seaons of Advent, may your righteousness flourish and may your peace abound, that none shall hust or destroy on all your holy mountain. Amen

Doxology:

Offertory Prayer: ***
Gracious God, you offer us a gift beyond price. Your Son is like the sweet kiss of rain on a barren land. Your promised salvation is like the bread of heaven for those who are perishing. In gratitude for your abundant gifts, we commit ourselves to act justly, in solidarity with the poor, and we pledge our assistance to those who are in need. May the gifts we bring before you this day hasten the day when none shall hurt or destroy on all your holy mountain. Amen.

Hymn: “O Come, All Ye Faithful” #234

1. O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem.
Come and behold him, born the King of angels;
Refrain:
O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
2. True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal,
lo, he shuns not the Virgin's womb;
Son of the Father, begotten, not created;
(Refrain)
3. Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation;
O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God, all glory in the highest;
(Refrain)

Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 35: 1-10

The Message:

Hymn: “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear ” #218

1. It came upon the midnight clear,
that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth
to touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, good will to men,
from heaven's all-gracious King."
The world in solemn stillness lay,
to hear the angels sing.
2. Still through the cloven skies they come
with peaceful wings unfurled,
and still their heavenly music floats
o'er all the weary world;
above its sad and lowly plains,
they bend on hovering wing,
and ever o'er its Babel sounds
the blessed angels sing.
3. And ye, beneath life's crushing load,
whose forms are bending low,
who toil along the climbing way
with painful steps and slow,
look now! for glad and golden hours
come swiftly on the wing.
O rest beside the weary road,
and hear the angels sing!
4. For lo! the days are hastening on,
by prophet seen of old,
when with the ever-circling years
shall come the time foretold
when peace shall over all the earth
its ancient splendors fling,
and the whole world send back the song
which now the angels sing.

Call to Worship

Our Unison Prayer:***
Draw near to us, O God, even as we draw near to you. Open our hearts and our minds to your presence, and wake us up from the sleep and inattention holding us back. Prepare us to receive your love, even as we prepare our lives to celebrate the joy of Christ’s birth. Even when we’re tired, Lord, we long to awake to your presence. Even when we’re distracted, we yearn to be held spell bound by your power. Even when we’re lost and wander away from you, we hope to rest safely in the arms of your grace. Wake us from sleep, O God; reveal your love and mercy, and grant us the peace of your redemption. In humble gratitude, we pray. Amen.

Gracious God, as we bring our gifts to you, we bring much more than earthly treasure; we bring our very lives. Transform us through our giving, that we may grow ever closer to you. Hymn: “People, Look East” #202

1. People, look east. The time is near
Of the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able,
Trim the hearth and set the table.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the guest, is on the way.
2. Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare,
One more seed is planted there:
Give up your strength the seed to nourish,
That in course the flower may flourish.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the rose, is on the way.
3. Birds, though you long have ceased to build,
Guard the nest that must be filled.
Even the hour when wings are frozen
God for fledging time has chosen.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the bird, is on the way.
4. Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim
One more light the bowl shall brim,
Shining beyond the frosty weather,
Bright as sun and moon together.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the star, is on the way.
5. Angels, announce with shouts of mirth
Christ who brings new life to earth.
Set every peak and valley humming
With the word, the Lord is coming.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the Lord, is on the way.

Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 2: 1-5

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
2 In days to come
the mountain of the LORD’s house
shall be established as the highest of the mountains
and shall be raised above the hills;
all the nations shall stream to it.
3 Many peoples shall come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth instruction
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
4 He shall judge between the nations
and shall arbitrate for many peoples;
they shall beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation;
neither shall they learn war any more.
5 O house of Jacob,
come, let us walk
in the light of the LORD!

The Message:

Hymn: “I Want To Walk As A Child Of the Light ” #206

I want to walk as a child of the light
I want to follow Jesus
God set the stars to give light to the world
The star of my life is Jesus
Chorus:
In Him there is no darkness at all
The night and the day are both alike
The Lamb is the light of the city of God
Shine in my heart Lord Jesus
I want to see the brightness of God
I want to look at Jesus
Clear Sun of righteousness shine on my path
And show me the way to the Father (Chorus)
I'm looking for the coming of Christ
I want to follow Jesus
When we have run with patience the race
We shall know the joy of Jesus (Chorus)

Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Pentecost — November 20, 2022
Prelude:
Greetings & Announcements:

Call to Worship: ***
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth,
Worship the Lord with gladness.
Come into God’s presence with singing.
Enter God’s gates with thanksgiving.
Give thanks to the Lord, for God is good.
God’s steadfast love endures forever.

Hymn: “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come” #694

1 Come, ye thankful people, come,
raise the song of harvest home;
all is safely gathered in,
ere the winter storms begin.
God our Maker doth provide
for our wants to be supplied;
come to God's own temple, come,
raise the song of harvest home.
2 All the world is God's own field,
fruit as praise to God we yield;
wheat and tares together sown
are to joy or sorrow grown;
first the blade and then the ear,
then the full corn shall appear;
Lord of harvest, grant that we
wholesome grain and pure may be.
3 For the Lord our God shall come,
and shall take the harvest home;
from the field shall in that day
all offenses purge away,
giving angels charge at last
in the fire the tares to cast;
but the fruitful ears to store
in the garner evermore.
4 Even so, Lord, quickly come,
bring thy final harvest home;
gather thou thy people in,
free from sorrow, free from sin,
there, forever purified,
in thy presence to abide;
come, with all thine angels, come,
raise the glorious harvest home.

Our Unison Prayer:***
Almighty God, you have led us into a land flowing with milk and honey. As we rejoice in your manifold blessings, turn our thoughts to those who go hungry. As wwe celebrate the bounty of your table, focus our appetite on Food that does not perish. Help us find our true sustenance in Christ, that our souls may never hunger. And move us to draw our nourishment from him, that our spirits may never thirst. Almighty God, maker of heaven and earth, fill our hearts with gratitude on this day of thanksgiving. You have blessed us with waters that well up to eternal life. Open our mouths to proclaim the bounty of your good land, for by your power alone so we prosper. Help us to live each day with true gratitude for your many blessings. Amen

Offertory Prayer: ***
Bountiful God, we thank and praise you for your many gifts. You cause the earth to bring forth food. You cause rain to kiss the ground to sustain life. Receive these offerings, as the first fruit of our labors. May your gifts be acceptable to you, and may they go into the world as signs of our joy and thankfulness. In Jesus’ name, who is the bread of life, we pray. Amen

Old Testament Lesson: Deuteronomy 26: 1– 11
“When you have come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess and you possess it and settle in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. 3 You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, ‘Today I declare to the LORD your God that I have come into the land that the LORD swore to our ancestors to give us.’ 4 When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the LORD your God, 5 you shall make this response before the LORD your God: ‘A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. 6 When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, 7 we cried to the LORD, the God of our ancestors; the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 The LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; 9 and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O LORD, have given me.’ You shall set it down before the LORD your God and bow down before the LORD your God. 11 Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the LORD your God has given to you and to your house.

Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost — November 13, 2022
Prelude:
Greetings & Announcements:

Call to Worship: ***
God will create a new heaven and a new earth.
The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.
God rejoices over Jerusalem, and takes delight in God’s people.
The sound of weeping and crying will be heard no more.
Before we call out, God will answer. While we are still speaking, God will hear.
The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
They will neither harm nor destroy on all God’s holy mountain.
We worship the one who makes all things new.

Hymn: “This Is the Day of New Beginnings ” #383

Our Unison Prayer:***
There is no place to turn, O God, for the comfort we desire; no place, but to you alone, O Lord. Bless us this day, that we might be a blessing to others. Bless us this day, that we might be faithful witnesses to life in Christ Jesus, our redeemer and Lord. In our songs and prayers, in our scriptures and spoken words, reveal your purposes to us through the power of your Holy Spirit. We are here, O Lord. Equip us for ministry with the faith and assurance only you can provide. We bow this day before you, O Lord, to acknowledge our failings. We ask forgiveness: for words spoken in cruelty, for behavior that tears down, for failing the ministries of your church, for preferring temporal wealth to riches in your Sprit. Forgive us, we pray, and lead us into fullness of life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Offertory Prayer: ***
Eternal God, we draw life in your presence. You have created and sustained us to meet the challenges we face each day. May the gifts and offerings we bring before you reflect the light of Christ that shines in our lives, a light that can heal the world. In our living and in our giving, help us act in concert with your ways, that the world might see in us the power of your Spirit. Amen.

Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 65: 17— 25
For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth;
the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice forever in what I am creating,
for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy and its people as a delight.
19 I will rejoice in Jerusalem and delight in my people;
no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it or the cry of distress.
20 No more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days
or an old person who does not live out a lifetime, for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed.
21 They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat, for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
23 They shall not labor in vain or bear children for calamity,[a] for they shall be offspring blessed by the LORD— and their descendants as well.
24 Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox, but the serpent—its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the LORD.
