Happy Palm Sunday, and we are now one week away from launching as Grace Bible Church! Today, as we prepare for and look forward to Easter and our launch day, we look at the last word of our name, Church.

Throughout redemption history, God has had his people- people he called out of the darkness of the world and into the light of his glorious truth and reconciliation to himself. This was true in the Old Testament with the nation of Israel and sojourners among them, but in the New Testament, Jesus declared that he was doing something new, radical, far-reaching, and powerful. In Matthew 16, Jesus asks his disciples who they say he is, and Peter makes the true and eternal confession- "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." After this, Jesus said he would use Peter and the apostles to do something amazing. Jesus would use his followers to build his Church.

In Acts 2, the now ascended Christ sends the promised Holy Spirit to those same apostles and fulfills his promise to them, and as they preach the Gospel to all who would hear them and many were saved, the Church was born.

Now, thousands of years after those initial events, Christ still builds his Church, and he still miraculously uses broken people to do it. We include the term "Church" in our name to signal that we are a small piece of those that Christ has both redeemed and uses to call others into relationship with him. We confess together and with Peter, "Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, the Son of the Living God," and with the power of the Holy Spirit, we still proclaim with our past brothers and sisters in Acts 2 that Jesus Christ is the only way unto salvation, and he stands ready to save sinners and add even more to his global Church.

Church is not a building or an organization. Church is the people of God redeemed through the blood of Christ. We find our identity in this, that Christ has called us out of darkness and into his marvelous light and added us to his Church, and with joy and gladness we join in the work he is doing on the earth to glorify his name and spread his Gospel.

For the second word of our name, Grace Bible Church, we want to begin by considering that one of the most important questions a human can ask in things pertaining to God is not necessarily the question “Is there a God?” but rather “If there is a God, has he spoken?”

If there is a God, but he has not spoken, then it might as well be as if there is no God at all, since we would know nothing about him and have no path to him. However, if there is a God, and he has spoken, then it stands to reason that the words this God has spoken should be the most valuable, cherished, celebrated, and protected possession in all of human history.

At GBC, we believe there is God, and that he has spoken.

These words have been recorded, preserved, and valued down through the ages and now exist in a book we call the Bible- a collection of 66 individual books the make up a unified story that leads to Jesus. These books are works of history, narrative, poetry, biography, letters, and prophecy that men and women spoke and wrote under inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Every word of this collection of books has been inspired by God himself and calls us into his plan of redemption and deeper relationship with him.

This is why at GBC we preach expositionally, or from the text of scripture itself. We believe that we, as humans, don’t have anything to bring to the table of Christianity to help ourselves, therefore we look to God’s Word, and only God’s Word, as our source of direction and teaching for the way we are reconciled to and serve God. You won’t hear our own ideas or thoughts or philosophies on life; the only thing worthy to be preached here with us are the truths found in the Bible.

We signify this commitment to the Bible by placing it in our name, stating boldly that we are all about God and his Word.

Names are important, and the name of our church was chosen with intentionality and the purpose of our church in mind. This week on our page we'll explore what exactly we mean by the three words that make up our name- Grace, Bible, and Church.

The first is probably the most abstract and broad- we sing about grace, know people named grace, and talk about grace a lot, but even if you ask a seasoned pastor or seminary graduate what exactly grace is, it may take some time to answer!

To help understand grace, we can think of other religions, and that the primary focus of most major religions is to gain favor with their god. There is almost always a human striving involved in doing this, whether it be doing things the right way or not doing certain things the wrong way, a human must strive to gain favor with a higher power.

However, in Christianity, our strivings cease. God's posture towards his people is one of love and favor, not by our striving, but by his own choice. We did not strive for Jesus to come, he came by his own will. We did not strive to be redeemed, God redeemed us against our own sinful inclinations. We did not gain the favor of God by trying really really hard- God looked favorably on us because he loves us and it is his nature. And this unmerited favor is what we call grace.

At GBC, we affirm and rejoice in this favor of God towards us that he has freely given, and what we do and who we are as a church is wholly grounded in a response to the grace that God has already shown us. Though we have nothing that could adequately repay God for his grace, we give all we have out of grateful hearts to the one who redeemed us. This is so important and foundational to what we're about, that it is the first word in our name, Grace Bible Church!
