St. George Bulgarian Orthodox Church of Central Florida The Orthodox Church is the first Christian Church, the Church, founded by the Lord Jesus Christ, and described in the pages of the New Testament.

Her history can be traced in unbroken continuity all the way back to Christ and His 12 apostles. Тропар на Св. "For many are called, but few are chosen." (Matthew 22:14)

Tomorrow, on the 14th Sunday after Pentecost, we hear the Parable of the Wedding Banquet. In this Gospel reading, Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a king who prepared a great feast for his son. When the invited guests make excuses and refuse to attend, the king invites everyone he can find from the streets to fill the banquet hall. This parable is a powerful reminder that God invites all of us to partake in His heavenly kingdom. However, it also challenges us to prepare our hearts and come wearing the proper spiritual garment of repentance and love.

A Blessing That Found Its Way Home

We’re overjoyed to share how this beautiful icon of Dobri Dobrev, “Grandpa Dobri,” came to rest at St. George Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

Our own parishioner Chris Tanev was gifted this icon by a dear friend at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Melbourne, Florida. That friend had purchased an icon of Dobri for their own parish after being deeply moved by his life and legacy. As it happened, two icons arrived instead of one, and our friend felt called to pass it along to Chris. From there, it found its way to us, and today it has a home at St. George.

Who was Dobri Dobrev?

Born in 1914 in the village of Bailovo, Bulgaria, Dobri lost his father in World War I and was raised by his mother alone. He married in 1940 and raised four children, outliving two of them. During World War II, an aerial bombing left him nearly deaf, a hardship that, by his own account, drew him even closer to God and set him on a path of prayer even under Communist restrictions.

Around the year 2000, at about age 86, Dobri gave away everything he owned and began a life of radical simplicity, walking many miles each day from his village to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia to beg, not for himself, but for others. Every coin he collected he gave away to churches, monasteries, and orphanages, making him one of the largest private donors in the cathedral’s history, all while living with almost nothing himself.

He reposed in the Lord in 2018 at the age of 103, remembered around the world as a living icon of humility, generosity, and quiet faith.

We’re grateful this icon now stands among us as a reminder of Grandpa Dobri’s simple, extraordinary witness, and of the small, providential ways God connects His people across parishes and miles.

"He will lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons." (Matthew 21:41)

Tomorrow, on the 13th Sunday after Pentecost, we hear the powerful Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers. In this Gospel reading, Jesus tells the story of a landowner who entrusts his beloved vineyard to tenants who reject his messengers and ultimately his own son. This parable is a beautiful reminder to examine our own hearts. God has given us the ultimate gift in His Son and asks us to be good stewards of our faith, bringing forth spiritual fruits like love, compassion, and patience.

“Good master. What good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” (Matthew 19:16)

Tomorrow, on the 12th Sunday after Pentecost, we hear the powerful Gospel story of the Rich Young Man. When he approaches Jesus asking how to attain eternal life, Christ challenges him and us to look beyond our earthly possessions. It is a beautiful reminder to reflect on what truly matters, and to ask ourselves if our attachments are keeping us from fully following Him. As Christ reminds His disciples in this reading, even when letting go feels impossible for us, "with God all things are possible."

📚 Диана Чолакова – Орландо, САЩ

Повече от 15 години Диана Чолакова активно работи за съхраняването на българския език, култура и традиции сред българската общност в Орландо.

През 2010 г. тя е сред основателите на Българското неделно училище „Аз съм българче“, което и днес е важен образователен и културен център за българите в Орландо. В училището тя създава и клуб „Обичам България“, в който деца и възрастни се запознават с българския бит, традиции, занаяти и духовни ценности чрез занимания по родинознание, творчество, кулинария и православни беседи.

Диана Чолакова е и сред създателите на литературния клуб „Поезия, любов и вино“, който организира литературни четения и театрални постановки с участието на представители на българската общност.

През годините тя организира множество инициативи за българите в Орландо – празници и тържества за деца, викторини „Обичам България“, събития за българските дами и вечери с прожекции на български филми. Като член на църковното настоятелство на БПЦ „Св. Георги Победоносец“ в Орландо, участва активно и в организирането на културни мероприятия и празнични програми.

Със своята инициативност, постоянство и отдаденост Диана Георгиева Чолакова създава среда, в която българските деца и семейства могат да пазят жива връзката с езика, традициите и духовните ценности на България.

🏆 Диана Георгиева Чолакова е номинирана за отличието „Българка на годината – Св. Злата Мъгленска 2025“ от Църковното настоятелство към БПЦ „Св. Георги Победоносец“ в Орландо.

Yesterday, our parish community gathered in joy and prayer to celebrate the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos.

It was a special blessing to welcome Father Ljubiša and the faithful from St. Petka Serbian Orthodox Church - Orlando, who joined us in worship and fellowship. Following the Divine Liturgy, everyone enjoyed a feast featuring delicious lamb soup, sarmi, pasta, and cake.

Thank you to everyone who helped prepare, serve, and celebrate with us. May the Holy Theotokos intercede for us all and continue to protect our parish family!

Join us tomorrow as we celebrate the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God!

The Divine Liturgy will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by our traditional lunch with traditional lamb soup, a cherished tradition at St. George Church since its founding in 2009. We gather in honor of the Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, asking for her holy intercession and protection.

“She who is higher than the heavens, more glorious than the Cherubim, and held in greater honor than all creation; she who, through her surpassing purity, became the vessel of the eternal Essence, today commits her all-holy soul into the hands of her Son. With her, the universe is filled with joy, and to us is given the great mercy.”

May the Most Holy Theotokos intercede for all of us and guide us always to her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
