On this day, 2,000 years ago, Jesus was in the city of Jerusalem preparing for what he had predestined since the foundation of the world, His death and resurrection.
The Passover meal was a feast that the Jews held to celebrate the delivering of the Israelite people out of Egyptian slavery, recorded in the book of Exodus. The wine and bread represented the body and blood of the lambs they sacrificed during that time as acts of worship to God. The Israelites saw such a gruesome sacrifice necesary to pay for their sins.
Yet God did not desire bloody sacrifice as worship. He did not desire a sacrifice out of fear, but rather love. And so, He Himself became the sacrifice as evidence of His love for us.
It’s like a marriage. The sacrifices we make for one another are the evidence of our love. In this way two people are brought closer together.
And so it is the same between us and God. The reason we no longer live in societies where animal sacrifices are offered IS NOT because we have evolved past such a primitive thinking. It is because 2,000 years ago one man, one God, did something to change who we are and how we live.
Easter is a celebration of what Christ has done, and the world is all the better for it.
