11/30/2025
Greetings everyone in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,
Advent is a time of expectation and hope filled with rich traditions. “Advent” means “arrival” or “coming,” and it prompts us to pause each day in December and remember why Jesus came at Christmas.
Adveent season is from Sunday, November 30-December 24 2025.
This sacred time invites us to slow down from all the holiday preparations and parties, take a deep breath, and remember the reason for the season: the eternal Jesus Christ taking on human flesh.
The advent wreath and candles provide beautiful symbolism for each week of advent as we wait for Christmas to arrive.
* The Advent wreath, with candles lit on each of the four Sundays before Christmas, symbolizes Jesus as the light of the world (John 1:4–5); its evergreen base represents eternal life, while added holly, berries, and pinecones point to Christ’s sacrifice and the new life found in His resurrection.
A new candle is lit on each of the four Sundays before Christmas. Each candle represents something different, although traditions vary. Often, the first, second, and fourth candles are purple; the third candle is rose-colored. Sometimes all the candles are red; in other traditions, all four candles are blue or white. Occasionally, a fifth white candle is placed in the middle of the wreath and is lit on Christmas Day to celebrate Jesus’ birth.
* The first candle symbolizes hope and is called the "Prophet’s Candle." The prophets of the Old Testament, especially Isaiah, waited in hope for the Messiah’s arrival. The purple color symbolizes royalty, repentance, and fasting.
Isaiah 9:2, 6-7: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. […] For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
Prayer: Lord, as we light this purple candle of hope, we remember that Your light pierces the darkness and brings hope to all who trust in You. Fill our hearts with anticipation for Your coming, and may we carry this hope into every corner of our lives. Amen.
