April 5, 2026, Resurrection of Our Lord, Easter Sunday

A New Life Has Begun!

“When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.” Colossians 3:4

Easter is a time of worship, renewal, and surprises. Kids all over the world will hunt for Easter eggs, treats and gifts. More people attend church services on Easter than on any other Sunday. Many of us will celebrate Easter with a big family event, usually including a wonderful meal.

Easter is a time when we celebrate new life in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul tells us “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

I challenge you (and me), with God’s help, to make a new start this Easter season. Commit to daily prayer and devotion. Replace those old feelings of stress or despair with the joy and hope of new life in Christ’s resurrection. Be more forgiving…And don’t forget to forgive yourself, either. Cultivate gratitude. Keep this up and you will soon find that your new life in Christ has already begun!

Let’s Pray: Lord Jesus Christ, you are risen! I turn my entire life over to you. Let my new life begin! Amen.

God’s richest blessing to all who have followed our Lenten Devotions this year. It is our privilege to have you as fellow journeyers with Christ.

Grace and peace be with you till we meet again!

Mortality

“But mortals die and are laid low; humans expire, and where are they?” Job 14:10

Few of us look forward to death with cheeriness; and, if we’re honest, the idea of dying is kind of frightening. Old or young, most of us want more good time right here on earth. Why do we have to die, anyway? My best answer is because God made us human, people of the earth. We are mortal. Our bodies wear out over time and death is the natural end to life.

Job knew about despair. He knew about the reality of the grave. But Job also knew about the reality of God. This knowledge prompted him to declare, “I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.”

Holy Saturday reminds us God works even in the darkness. Even when hope is hidden it is not gone. Death does not have the final word.

Let’s Pray: Lord, I trust in you to bring new life out of the darkness. Amen.

Ten Thousand Angels

“Put away your sword,” Jesus told him. “Those who live by the sword will die by the sword. Don’t you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly?” Matthew 26:52-53

I’m sorry to report that tonight’s Good Friday Service at Almont has been cancelled due to a winter storm. We had planned a Tenebrae Service on the seven last words of Christ that would have been led mainly by our confirmation students.

Tenebrae is Latin for “darkness” or “shadows.” Our Good Friday Tenebrae Service includes seven bible readings and devotions on Jesus’ last words followed by extinguishing candles until the church is left in shadows and darkness.

Our Service traditionally begins with the singing of a hymn, written by Ray Overholt in 1959, called Ten Thousand Angels. This is the chorus.

He could have called ten thousand angels
To destroy the world and set Him free.
He could have called ten thousand angels,
But He died alone, for you and me.

We celebrate Good Friday because Jesus chose to die for us rather than use his divine power to avoid suffering and death. Through God’s never-ending and sacrificial love for us, “Salvation’s wondrous plan was done.”

Let’s Pray: Lord Jesus, thank You for the sacrifice you made on the cross for my sins. Amen.

Because of the upcoming winter storm, it is predicted that Almont could receive 6-12" of new snow accompanied by 20 mph winds, therefore tomorrow's Good Friday Worship has been cancelled. Please join us for Easter Worship at Sims at 10am on Sunday.

The Devil Made Me Do It

“The devil had already decided that Judas son of Simon Iscariot would betray Jesus.”
John 13:2

When Jesus Christ Superstar came out in 1971, the title song, Superstar, was on the radio all the time. The teachers at the Lutheran school I attended told us kids not to listen. That just made us want to listen even more! Do you remember the lyrics?

“If you'd come today, you could have reached a whole nation. Israel in 4 BC had no mass communication. Don’t you get me wrong… I only want to know: ‘Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, who are you, what have you sacrificed?’” This was the song of Judas, along with a chorus of angels. In fact, Jesus Christ Superstar is a musical look at Jesus’ final days mainly through the eyes, ears and voice of Judas.

Judas betrayed Jesus and we will always remember him as a villain. But today’s bible verse reminds us the devil had already made the decision for Judas. Soon afterward, Judas was filled with terrible remorse for his actions. It seems ironic that Judas’ betrayal of Jesus led directly to the fateful and holy day we Christians remember as Good Friday.

Let’s Pray: Our Father in Heaven, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.

A Trained Tongue

“The Lord God has given me a trained tongue, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word.” Isaiah 50:4a

Remember Vice President Dan Quayle? His tongue sometimes got him into trouble. One time, while campaigning, he said "I love California, I practically grew up in Phoenix." Another time, at a spelling bee, Quayle corrected a student who correctly spelled the word, potato. He told the student it should be spelled, “potatoe.” He got a lot of grief for that one, but I don’t think it was so bad. Everyone makes mistakes.

Some people think God gives a trained tongue only to pastors and they are the only ones called to sustain the weary, serve the suffering, and bring people to faith. This is simply not true. All people of God are called to God’s ministry!

A trained tongue is not about speaking eloquently or without mistakes. It is about speaking God’s comfort and hope to those who need it. God has given us all trained tongues!

Let’s Pray: Lord God, let my tongue be a source of blessing and healing with all glory to you. Amen.

Can You Believe This?

“For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:18

Can you believe God created the universe and everything in it even though scientists tell us it all happened in a spontaneous explosion of light some 14 billion years ago.

Can you believe our wealth, status, race, s*x, property and possessions mean absolutely nothing to God? In fact, these things may be a stumbling block to a true relationship with God.

Can you believe that Jesus is a friend to foreigners, people who behave and believe differently than we do, poor people, sick people, crazy looking people on street corners and even people with AIDS?

The message of the cross is foolishness when we rely solely on our knowledge. The message of the cross is foolishness when we rely solely on who we are and what we have. The message of the cross is foolishness when we allow ourselves to hate our neighbors and ignore the needy. Can you believe this?

Let’s Pray: Lord, replace my arrogance with your Holy Spirit. Save me. Amen.

Some Things Just Can’t Wait

“You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” John 12:8

In Luke 14 Jesus said, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.” Did Jesus really want us to hate our families?

No! Jesus was exaggerating to make a point. Have you ever said, “It’s hotter than hell in here,” or “I’m freezing to death?” Were you exaggerating? What Jesus meant is we must place our love for him above all other earthly relationships. This is something that just can’t wait!

Same goes for our Bible verse for today. Jesus had been dining with his dear friends, Mary, Martha and Lazarus, when, suddenly and unannounced, Mary anointed his feet with expensive perfume and dried them with her hair. Judas objected, complaining that the perfume should have been sold to feed the poor. Jesus received Mary’s gift for what it was: a spontaneous and loving act of worship.

Did Jesus think ending poverty is impossible? Was Jesus indicating he will not always be with us? No, but, like Mary, we need to love and honor Jesus without delay and without reservation. This is something that just can’t wait!

Let’s Pray: Lord, I give you my heart, my soul and my all. Today! Now! This very moment! Amen.

Who is This?

“When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.” Matthew 21:11

Who is this? Who is this friend of shepherds, crippled and blind people, tax collectors, questionable women and all kinds of sinners and riff-raff? Why in the world would he be riding into Jerusalem like some kind of king?

Pretty soon even his friends and disciples will turn on him, betray him and deny they even know him. Yes, in less than a week, he will be arrested, convicted as an enemy of the people and forced to carry his cross to a place called Golgotha where he will be crucified with the worst of criminals.

Who is this? Is this Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord… The one who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried? Is he the one who descended into hell; and, on the third day, rose again? Is he the same one who ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father? Could he possibly be the one who will come again to judge the living and the dead and whose kingdom will have no end?

Yes, it is a very good question, indeed. Who is this?

Let’s Pray: Lord Jesus Christ, I want to know you better. Amen.

It’s Gonna be Alright

“I called out your name, O God, called from the bottom of the pit. You listened when I called out, ‘Don’t shut your ears! Get me out of here! Save me!’ You came close when I called out. You said, ‘It’s going to be all right.’” Lamentations 3:55-57 (MSG)

The book of Lamentations is a collection of poems and prayers written after King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and conquered Judah in 587 BC. This was a terrible time of suffering for the People of Israel.

The author of Lamentations takes suffering seriously, but doesn’t try to explain it away or minimize it. Suffering is not something to be avoided. Rather, it is a difficult time of healing to be accepted with dignity in the blessed assurance that God is a companion in our suffering.

Suffering will not last forever, but God’s love and mercy will!

Let’s Pray: Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay; close by me forever and love me I pray. Amen.
