Vesak Ceremony was held on May 31 at the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center. Many gathered to honor the Buddha by observing the 8 precepts and singing devotional songs. Led by Bhante Pemaratana, Bhante Metta and Bhante Saddhananda, it was a day of learning, mindfulness practices, and deep meditation. Sincere admiration goes to those who observed the precepts. Deep gratitude goes to those who brought food and other supplies. Deep appreciation and applause go to the children and adults who performed devotional songs (bhakthi gee). Deep gratitude goes to those who helped with preparations and cleaning of the center.

The Buddhist Society of Pittsburgh warmly invites everyone to join a Peace Walk as part of the annual celebration of the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana. Honoring these three sacred events reminds us of the potential for enlightenment in all living beings.

Local Buddhist communities will share their traditions and reflections on walking the path of peace. Activities will include bathing the Baby Buddha, chanting, cultural arts, meditation, mindfulness practices, and more.

The celebration will be followed by a Peace Walk to the Allegheny River, where we will walk mindfully together, radiating a message of peace. At the river, participants will offer a ladle of blessed water, sharing wishes for world peace.
Children are warmly welcome—bring the whole family!

We are delighted to share that the first distribution of school supplies and bags was successfully held on 28th December at Sripathi Piriven Vihara, Diyakalamulla, Kuliyapitiya.

School bags with stationery sufficient for the entire academic year were distributed to 130 students, while 230 additional students received essential stationery items. The event also included two short speeches encouraging students on how to improve their studies.

Please enjoy a few snapshots from the ceremony.

A few more distributions will be held in the coming weeks in the areas affected by recent cyclone, and we will keep you updated on these events.

We are deeply grateful to our generous donors from the USA and Malaysia for supporting this meaningful project. Thanks to their kindness, we were able to bring great joy to many children and much-needed relief to low-income families.

We wish everyone a very happy, prosperous, and peaceful New Year.

Sri Lanka is currently facing one of its worst flooding disasters in decades. Cyclone Ditwah has inundated large parts of the island, triggering landslides, causing rivers and reservoirs to overflow, and turning low-lying regions into dangerous zones.
Many lives have been lost. Many are missing. Homes and infrastructure have been destroyed. Transportation and communication networks have been severely disrupted. Thousands of families have been displaced.

We are organizing a fundraiser to support displaced families to get essential needs, including,

• Dry Rations
• Sanitary supplies
• Baby food and nappies
• Drinking water
• Disinfectants
• Water purifiers

We are in contact with the Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington, D.C., to coordinate relief efforts and ensure that all funds are transferred efficiently and responsibly.

Please consider sending a donation—large or small—to the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center. Your generosity will make a meaningful difference to those suffering during this crisis.
