Bethany Presbyterian Church will be hosting at Blue Christmas service at 7pm on December 19th. Stephen Ministers will be assisting Pastor Katie in this special worship designed for folks that are grieving or struggling this time of year. There will be a tender message from the pulpit, candles to light, messages to leave in the manger, and Stephen Ministers and Pastors to anoint with oil and pray with individuals as needed. There will also be prayer shawls for those who need to feel hugged by God. All are welcome at this special service.

At today's combined Assembly of Lackawanna and Lehigh Presbyteries, commissioners selected Mountain Laurel Presbytery as the name for our soon to be merged presbytery. In making their presentation, the Merger Team acknowledged their deep appreciation for the 54 suggestions of possible names made by members of the presbyteries earlier this fall. They narrowed down the list of possibilities by looking for a name that would be unique to the geographical setting of the merged presbytery, that would embrace our congregation in Waverly, New York, and that would offer depth of meaning and hope for our new presbytery.

The person who originally suggested Mountain Laurel Presbytery for our name offered this explanation: “As I travelled from Honesdale to Summit Hill for the [presbytery] meeting in April, it was a beautiful Spring day. I realized how absolutely beautiful the eastern part of the state is, no matter where you travel. The mountain laurel lined the side of the road almost all the way down - not in bloom yet, but the shrubs were there. I’m sure by June it was absolutely gorgeous!”

The Merger Team discovered that the reason the mountain laurel is the state flower of Pennsylvania is because back in 1933, Governor Gifford Pinchot made the choice because it is a flower that can be found across the entire commonwealth. And while we were mindful of not suggesting a name that would exclude our sisters and brothers in Waverly, New York, we were relieved to learn that mountain laurel are also prevalent in upstate New York.

The story of the design of the mountain laurel bloom is intriguing in that it springs open at incredible speed. In addition to its beauty and prominence in our area, there is so much imagery around its design that could also be used to define our new presbytery.

Join with us in celebrating this important step in our plan for merger as we look forward to moving into our new identity. We certainly are better together. Thanks be to God!
