MCCLV's Rev. Goudy was honored to participate in the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod - NEPA, ELCA "Service of Farewell & Godspeed for Bishop Christopher DeForest" this past weekend at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Auburn, PA. Below are Goudy's remarks at the event:

It means a great deal to be here today and share in this farewell and Godspeed to Bishop DeForest.

The first major collaboration Metropolitan Community Church had with the Synod was a worship and day of service on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Day in 2025. The Synod’s Racial Justice Team led the service projects and Metropolitan Community Church coordinated worship and while we trusted in God, we were nervous about it. We wanted it to go well and for God to be honored, for MLK to be honored and for the Holy Spirit to be experienced. When we host an MLK service typically we have a choral reading, using a piece of Rev King’s writing or a speech or one of his sermons. That year we focused on King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail. We needed six readers for the service, three from Metropolitan Community Church and three from the Synod. We were so glad to hear that Bishop DeForest was going to serve as one of the readers but it also made us even more nervous - the Bishop was going to be there!

There was no need to be nervous. Bishop DeForest was skilled at deescalating anxiety and his positive energy was contagious at the rehearsal and also on the day of the event. I’ll leave with a quotation from King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail. King wrote his letter from jail in 1963 but he could have been writing it in 2026. Rev King wrote: “Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy and transform our pending national elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood.”

Bishop DeForest, as you enter into this next chapter of your spiritual journey may it be full of transformation, continued justice advocacy and the strong bonds that come with community.

MCCLV is grateful for Lis Kemmerer who coordinated another great Pride Festival booth for the church. Lis is pictured here with booth volunteers Ashley and Nic. Praise God for the opportunity to serve and spread the good news of God's inclusive love.

This afternoon, MCCLV staff delivered the summer food drive collection to Asa Packer Elementary School in Bethlehem, PA. Rev. Goudy and Minister Brian Jones are pictured with School Counselor Miss Diana Karam. MCCLVers donated 57 boxes of cereal, 76 packages of pasta, 187 cans of soup and 61 other canned goods to the school's pantry. Your generosity will help sustain the students and households of Asa Packer, thank you.

It is always an honor for MCCLV to serve neighbors at the Bethlehem Emergency Shelter. Yesterday, MCCLV & Shelter volunteers served 150 bagged lunches to people in need. Thank you to sandwich artists Bob K, Ann W, Robin, Brad, Larry, Carol P, Goudy, Cami, Ashley and Maggie. Thank you also to the kind donors for stocking the supplies. Continue prayers for our beloved street neighbors: for permanent shelter, healing and hope.
