’Twas the Night Before Awana
’Twas the night before Awana, when all through the church,
Not a child could sit still—they were ready to lurch.
The handbooks were stacked in the cabinet with care,
At Cottonwood Creek Church, soon clubbers would be there.
The leaders were resting, all snug in their beds,
While opening ceremony danced around in their heads.
With directors well-planned and the volunteers set,
They smiled knowing this would be the best season yet.
When out in the parking lot there arose such a sound,
I sprang from my pillow and looked all around.
Away to the window I hurried to see,
What wonderful sight could this possibly be?
The moon on the church with its soft silver light
Made everything glow in the calm of the night.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But children imagining club time was near.
The little Cubbies came first with their giggles and cheer,
Excited for songs and their friends to be near.
The Sparks followed after with bright, joyful grins,
Ready to hide God’s great Word deep within.
The T&T kids came with Bibles in hand,
Prepared to memorize just as God planned.
The Trek and Journey students, both faithful and true,
Growing in wisdom in all that they’d do.
The gym, though silent, with no one around,
Would soon echo laughter and happy kid sounds.
The verses would be practiced, the uniforms neat,
With eager young footsteps soon filling each seat.
The leaders with kindness would welcome each face,
Showing God’s love through His mercy and grace.
With high fives and smiles and encouraging words,
They’d point every child to Christ, our Lord.
The gospel would shine through each lesson and song,
Reminding each heart where they truly belong.
For badges and awards are exciting to earn,
But knowing God’s Word is the greatest concern.
Then I heard in my heart, so gentle and clear,
“The mission is faithful, year after year.
Reach every child with the hope of My Son;
The race is worth running until it is done.”
So here’s to Awana at Cottonwood Creek Church once more,
With laughter and learning and treasures in store.
May each clubber grow wiser in all that they do,
As they hide God’s Word deep in hearts made anew.
And I whispered with joy as I turned out the light,
“Happy Awana to all, and to all a great night!”
