Oftentimes in the Bible before a servant is used by God to do mighty works, they go through a period of quietness. In 1 Kings 17:1-7, God commanded Elijah to hide by Brook Cherith after he had proclaimed a drought. While Elijah was there, he made use of the opportunity to quiet down his heart. He did not talk to anyone, see anything, or hear any news since the only thing that he would have seen was God’s daily providence of bread and meat. It is because of this quietness in his environment that his heart was able to refocus on God and be strengthened.

In contrast, the Israelites were physically freed from the bo***ge of Egypt and were in the wilderness, but their hearts were still in Egypt. In Exodus 17:1-7, the Israelites complained to God over the lack of water and felt Egypt was better. They could not see or appreciate God’s power and providence even though they were also fed daily with manna. While Elijah was strengthened, the Israelites died in the wilderness. The difference was in the quietness of the heart.

When we encounter difficulties in our lives, God tells us that our strength is in quietness. We can only quiet down our hearts when we focus on God in a quiet environment. Disconnect from media, take a step back from our social circles; wake up early in the morning to reflect on His words and promises, attend a church seminar, or go to church earlier to pray in quietness. When our environment is quiet, it is much easier to quiet our hearts as well. In this quietness we can fully pursue and focus on God—then He will give us strength.

Reflection Questions
1. The next time you come across difficulties, what will you do to quiet your heart?

BIBLE VERSE REFLECTION

"Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice." (John 18:37b)

There are many voices in our world today—the values of this world constantly clash with the values of God. Being exposed to so many voices, how will we make our choice? Do we really treat God as our King? Do we walk in the truth?

The natural response of adoration for God is total surrender.

In John’s heavenly vision, the twenty-four elders sat on thrones, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads (Rev 4:4). They had been given great honor and glory. However, John records that they fell down “before Him who sits on the throne and [worshipped] Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne.” (Rev 4:10). The word “cast” means “throw.” These elders threw their crowns of gold down when they worshiped God! Before the majestic and splendor of God, the only place fit for their crowns was the ground.

Before our Lord Almighty, our treasures become rubbish (cf. Phil 3:8); our wisdom becomes foolishness; our strength becomes weakness (cf. 1Cor 1:25); and our righteous garments become filthy rags (Isa 64:6). As we come into the sanctuary and bow down to the King of kings, we cannot but confess our utter insufficiency and cast before His throne everything that makes us proud.

Our Lord Jesus taught us that true worship does not depend on where we worship but whether we worship in spirit and in truth (Jn 4:21-24). On the one hand, God wants us to bow before Him not only outwardly, but sincerely with our spiritual being and in complete truthfulness.

On the other hand, and taking our worship a genuine step further, it is important for us to surrender our spirits to His spirit and our truthfulness to His truth. Sincerity is not enough. A person can be sincerely wrong. We cannot worship and serve God according to our own ways and will; we must surrender to His ways and His will. That is worship, and it is a daily action.

By recalling God’s blessings and remembering that He always looks out for the benefit of His children, we have every assurance that although He may not provide for us in the way we want, ultimately His provision is the best. When God appears on the scene later than we expect, we should not be the ones who gave up on Him, like the passengers who didn’t think the bus would ever arrive. Instead, we are able to wait because we know He will come to our aid.

So the question we posed, “Where is the line where I can stop waiting?” now becomes, “How do I push that line to the horizon, where I am willing to submit to God’s will?”

In Hebrews 11, we read about the patriarchs and prophets, whose faith knew no boundaries. They believed and lived by God’s promises to the day they died. Some never saw the fulfillment of God’s promise to them in their lifetimes, and yet they believed.

Our patience is bound by our faith in God’s promises. When our patience runs out while waiting for God to show us His way, it means we have lost faith in God. While it is not easy to endure the seemingly eternal time it might take for something we want to happen, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Heb 12:2), will give us the strength to be patient.

Basically, the length of time we are willing to wait for God boils down to whether we truly believe in our hearts that God will fulfill our requests, and whether our hearts are open to the fact that God may fulfill our requests in an alternative way, and perhaps even at an alternative time.

Then the dust will return to the earth as it was,
And the spirit will return to God who gave it. (Eccl 12:7)

When our life on earth ends, what will become of us? The Bible tells us that our bodies will return to dust, but this is not the end of the story. The Lord has a plan for faithful Christians when He comes again. Our lowly bodies will be resurrected and transformed to conform to His glorious, incorruptible body and receive our heavenly citizenship and inheritance (Phil 3:20–21; 1 Cor 15:52).

Therefore, life is not just about our flesh; it is primarily about the spirit. The animating breath that brought life to our bodies of dust is the same breath that conveys God's word. While the body can be sustained with bread and water, the spirit cannot survive without the teachings of the Bible, which explains the spiritual sickness under which humanity toils. We must recognize our infirmity and turn once again to the Bible. It is only through strengthening our relationship with God and His healing word that we can revive our conscience, remove the tumor of self-centeredness, neutralize the influence of lust on our bodies, and return to total spiritual health.

Being a true Christian in a consumerist culture today means having faith, and believing that we will find true fulfillment, joy, and identity in God and nothing else (Phil 3:8–9). God does not want us to be like a senseless bird. Rather, He invites us to settle in His kingdom and find rest, to trust in Him from day to day.

God desires that we strive to direct our lives towards Him. This takes effort and sustained focus. But by the grace of God, He will always guide us. May we redirect our lives towards Him and become fully baked Christians—fully cleansed and holy. May we seek to be fully settled in the arms of Christ, rather than being distracted by the godless culture around us. And let us rejoice that, in Christ, we have infinite joy and salvation.

According to the words of wise King Solomon, there is a time for everything: a time to study and a time to play, a time to learn worldly knowledge and a time to gain spiritual wisdom. But it is up to us to set out that time, to use our time wisely and devote part of it to God.

Imagine that, week in and week out, our days begin at 8 a.m. and end at 12 a.m., with no time to talk to God except for a few seconds before bed. What would our faith and our relationship with God be like? It would probably be weak, if not nonexistent. Like any other relationship, we need to spend time with God in order to develop a closer and more personal relationship with Him.

In addition, setting aside time for God allows us to keep sight of what is important—our ultimate destination of the heavenly kingdom. Our faith has a direct impact on whether or not we can enter heaven—and this is definitely worth making time for. Spending time with God not only impacts our ultimate goal, but it also makes a great difference in our daily lives. The following poem entitled "The Difference" illustrates how important it is for us to come into God's presence daily in order to gain strength and peace from Him. The busier we are and the larger our tasks, the more important it is to pray to the Lord.

In relation to our spiritual lives, the life-sustaining force that we need to fill ourselves with before we can truly come to the aid of others is not oxygen, but love. And the source of this love is God Himself, for God is love. As stated in 2 Corinthians 1:4, God “comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” This passage tells us that in order to give comfort, we must first have received it.

Providing comfort is just one of the many ways in which God loves us and in which we can love all those around us. In order to have this constant supply of God’s love radiating both within us and toward others, we must renew our relationship with Him every day.

Securing a strong connection with God on a daily basis is as essential to our spiritual lives as breathing in oxygen is to our physical survival. Human efforts can only take us so far. However, frequent intakes of God’s spirit and His word will turn into a never-ending stream of love that can be channeled to others effectively and whole-heartedly.

Questions for reflection:
1. Identify within yourself the condition of your connection and relationship with God. What do you find?
2. Is His love deeply rooted in you when you find yourself in a situation to comfort others?
