In the apostle Paul's letter to Rome, he shifts focus to Israel beginning in chapter nine. Building on God's sovereign choice for those whom He saves, Paul now tackles the anticipated question of God's fairness. Is God Just?
This is a question that many people have wrestled with for centuries and continue to wrestle with today. The problem is that we tend to judge God based on our own presuppositions and knowledge. This results in nothing less than frustration without understanding. Why?
Paul gives an illustration to help his readers understand, quoting OT Scripture from Isaiah 45. "Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?" As the creator of all things, God is Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient. In other words, He is sovereign and has every right to choose what He does. What we fail to understand is that His choices are made with mercy and compassion.
Instead of asking, " Is God just?" We need to ask, "Why should He love sinful people to begin with?" "Why should He have compassion on those who hate Him and His ways?" "Why should He let you and me enter His kingdom knowing the evil in our hearts?" While we cannot possibly presume to know what God knows, the simple answer to all these questions is "Because Jesus offers us forgiveness through Him."
