Please join us in welcoming Whitney Mallory as our new Seminarian Intern! You may have already seen her helping lead worship on several occasions in July, but we are excited that she joins WPC staff officially this week. A member of Westminster, Whitney has completed two years of studies at Virginia Theological Seminary and is a candidate for the ministry under the care of National Capital Presbytery. She has previously served on the Session as Chair of Youth Formation.

Throughout August and September, Whitney will serve in a part-time staff position, leading in worship and assisting with the opening of the children’s and youth formation year, working with Patty Chamberlain, Director of Family Ministries & Congregational Life, and Scott Planting, Director of Adult Formation. Following Pastor Jacob and Pastor Olivia’s return and for the rest of the program year, Whitney will continue to help lead in worship, and have the opportunity to shadow our clergy and other staff to learn about professional life in the church.

The Westminster Choir recently got back from a summertime adventure in Norway! 🇳🇴

Starting in Bergen, the picturesque "gateway to the fjords," we sang at the Bergen Cathedral the day after Norway lost to England in the World Cup Quarterfinals. ⚽️ From there, we boarded the MS Vesteralen to sail up the coast. Our next stop was the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, which has been a pilgrimage site for centuries: we sang in the "Pilgrim's Service" there.

Next, onwards and upwards past the Arctic Circle to Tromso, where we experienced 24-hours of daylight. ☀ The Arctic Cathedral is the northernmost cathedral in the world. Our concert there was a ticketed event with proceeds going to a local charity. Last but not least we sang in Sunday worship with the American Lutheran Congregation, a church founded shortly after WWII to serve Oslo's growing English-speaking population.

Our annual Flying Solo Fall Retreat is coming up soon! On October 2-4, 2026, join us for a time of fun and fellowship, relaxation and learning as we gather together at Claggett Center in Adamstown, MD. Christine Hershey will be leading us in times of discussion and sharing our stories, as well as fun creative breakout sessions around the theme of grace and newness of life. We will be drawing from Kathleen Norris's Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, the Psalms, and other resources for our inspiration for this time together.

At the end of June, ten Westminster youth and four chaperones went to Spirit Lake Indian Reservation in North Dakota to serve in ministry with Bdecan Presbyterian Church, one of our National Missions Partners. We had a wonderful and meaningful time serving in the food pantry and teaching a "Christmas in June"-themed Vacation Bible School!

Congrats to our softball team! ⚾🏆👏 Two weeks ago, they beat Emmanuel Lutheran to win the City of Alexandria Church League championship! Westminster won the game 28-19 and finished the season with a 10-2 record.

Because of our renovation, Pastor Larry’s Old & New Testament classes will take place on Zoom this year! This is a great opportunity for people who travel, live out of town, or need to take the class from home, to do so. Please feel free to invite family and friends to join in as well.

Join our very own Rev. Dr. Larry Hayward for a survey course of either Testament, learning the basic content of each book and exploring the text in detail. Each class will have an overall presentation of themes by Larry with discussion among the whole class, followed by reflection in small groups (which will vary each week). Members, friends, and visitors are invited to join the more than 500 who have taken one of Larry’s classes over the past two decades. While challenging, you will have a new appreciation for what has been described as “the strange new world within the Bible,” and have the best opportunity to get to know others in this tremendous community that we call Westminster!

Classes run September 2026 through April 2027, with the Old Testament class meeting on Sundays from 4:00-6:00 PM and the New Testament class meeting on Wednesdays from 9:30-11:30 AM. Learn more and register at wpc-alex.org/old-and-new-testament/
