On this space between day, I can only say it feels more real now than ever before. While this is a day of doubt, despair and disbelief, tomorrow morning - on this side of the gospel - we awake with the knowledge that the Son is risen. Blessings to you.

So that…

Philippians 2…
The “kenosis” passage.

Kenosis means “to empty.”

Philippians 2:5-8

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped;
7 but, but being made in human likeness emptied himself;
by taking the very nature of a slave,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!

The next verse starts with the words, “So that…one day…”

That day is not what happens on Maundy Thursday.

Maundy Thursday, sadly, ends in darkness.

“So that…” is a promise of light yet to come.

On this side of Easter, however, we know the rest of the story.

If you don’t, read Philippians 2:8-11; read Isaiah 45, read Revelation 5.

There is a promise. It is both now and not yet.

We are expected to, as our passage starts, “…to have the same mindset as…” Jesus. To empty ourselves. To serve. To love one another as Christ loved us.

In that way and in that way only will be God be glorified in this Holy Week.

If you are willing to continue to read, just read a few more verses (Philippians 2:8-11; Isaiah 45; Revelation 5; and John 17).

Precursor for Easter Sunday.

Maundy Thursday ends in darkness. On Easter Morning the Son is risen.

Out Of The Depths I Call You:

'Out of the depths I call to you O Lord: Lord hear my cry. Listen attentively to the sound of my pleading!’ (Ps 129:1-2).

Lent invites us to turn our eyes away from ourselves, our suffering, our loss. We are invited to turn our eyes towards Christ.

We are invited to follow in footsteps that are not our own, decisions we would not make, and lives we would not live.

John 11:21-27 talks about the resurrection of Lazarus. He was raised from the depths. Jesus called him out. Jesus heard the sound of those pleading around him.

Do you believe, in this season, that if you cry out Jesus will listen, hear your cry and raise you up out of your depths?

If so, follow in his steps instead of yours, believe what he says instead of what you say and do what he says to do instead of what you want to do.

He is the way the truth and the life. He’s calling you out of the depths and into new life.

Blessings,
Bo

In lieu of a devotional, I thought I would share a song. I was going to save it for Good Friday. Take a listen.

Grace, faith and repentance.

It’s Lent. We are commanded by Christ to follow Him to the Cross.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “It is by grace you have been saved through faith, not by works so that no one can boast…”

When Christ taught his disciples that whoever wanted to be his disciple must “…deny themselves, take up their cross and follow me…” (Mark 8:34), what do you think the 12 disciples were thinking?

Immediately, Jesus turned his face towards Jerusalem. The disciples knew that was a bad idea. Shortly thereafter, Jesus predicted his own death (for the first time).

Put yourselves in the shoes of one of the twelve disciples. Would you have followed Jesus in those last days to the Cross knowing the hostility he would receive?

The disciples knew. They did so with faith. Their feet moved in the rjfht direction. In the midst of Christ’s suffering and death, they needed to repent.

The empty Cross, the promise we receive in this season, however, is clear.

By faith we follow because we deny ourselves. With Christ, in faith, we take up our Cross.

But, by Grace and Grace alone, we are saved.

Ephesians 2:8, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, not by works so that no one can boast.”

In this Lenten season we are called to follow Christ to the cross, repent and receive His grace.

The following words are not from me. They are words i found written by someone else.

Elijah wanted to die.
David battled depression.
Moses lived with anxiety.
Paul rotted in prison.
Jacob was a deceiver.
Peter had a violent temper.
David committed adultery.
Noah numbed himself with alcohol.
Jonah ran from God.
Paul was a murderer.
Gideon was crippled by insecurity.
Miriam poisoned the camp with gossip.
Sarah tried to rush God’s promise.

And God still chose them.
Still called them.
Still used them.

POINT- Your failure doesn’t disqualify you.
Your refusal to repent does.

Grace isn’t permission to stay broken, it’s power to be transformed.

Hebrews 4:12: For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

We often think, in this Lenten season, to decide what to separate from ourselves. We think of what divides us from the bad and separates us from the evil.

What joins, though? The Living Word of God! It is alive and it is active and it is at work in your life bringing you closer to him and to others.

If you are invested in God’s word, He will separate you from the evil in your life, but because he is living and active, He will join with those who bring you life.

In this Lenten season, walk towards the Cross and adopt practices that bring you life.
