Saint James United Methodist Church-Alexandria

Saint James United Methodist Church-Alexandria Saint James is a community of folks figuring out what it means to be Jesus-followers in this world. We offer both a parking lot and on street parking.

We are a faith community on Alexandria's West End. We sold one building and have found a new-to-us space just about 500 feet from where we were before. We bought what was All Nations Church of God as they were moving as well. We have renovated the building to make it more "us." Being people in this world is challenging; we try to those challenges seriously as we struggle to see where faith fits in.

As Pastor Alyssa gets ready to head out and we prepare to welcome Pastor Don, here’s a little background on the Methodist system that moves pastors from church to church.

The United Methodist Church's unique system of deploying clergy has its roots in the earliest days of Methodism.

During our Easter discussion, the church said that we needed to know more about our neighbors and so during Eastertide, we’ll be engaging in a Jesus-centered, hands-on, discussion-focused community analysis that’ll take us beyond the walls of who we think we are so we can reflect deeply on who God is calling us to be.

If you’ve ever asked “Who is my neighbor,” this might be the sermon series for you.

4/12- Who Are We As Neighbors?
4/19- Walking Our Neighborhood (outdoors)
4/26- Mapping Our Neighborhood
5/3- Our Values and Our Vision
5/10- Listening to our Neighbors (Breakfast Church)
5/17-Putting It All Together
5/24-Living As Neighbors

Find community here.

Here is the question that has followed me through my years as a doctor and Surgeon General: How do we find a sense of connection, joy, and meaning in a world that too often fuels loneliness, conflict, and despair?

Over the course of thousands of conversations with people in exam rooms, town halls, and classrooms, I found a common thread: a quiet hunger for connection, a search for meaning, and a persistent longing to feel less alone. Over time, I came to understand something simple but profound: that community is not a luxury, but a form of medicine. We need community to feel whole.

Since leaving office, I have continued working with people across the country. What I keep hearing — and what I believe — is that the challenges we face run deeper than the headlines suggest. We have to look beneath the surface. This is about what we yearn for but are losing underneath: our relationships, our capacity for joy, and our sense that we are part of something that matters.

In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing a few new ways through which I hope we can have more open, honest conversations about how to restore the foundations of our well-being. This is about staying human, and it’s something we have to figure out together. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the search for a fulfilling life is not something we’re meant to navigate alone.

It’s Sunday!

Bring your peanut butter and jelly to church for our food drive for the West End Food Pantry. We already had to dip into our drive to make sure we had enough peanut butter last Monday!

This week, in Open Hearts, we’re taking a journey through Matthew, Isaiah, Hosea, and Galatians! Scripture is deeply connected and it connects us to our world.

See you at 10am!
