New Testament Church Loving God. Loving others. We are a Spirit filled, Spirit led, and Spirit empowered church.

Our mission is to minister to the Lord by worshiping in spirit and truth, to minister to one another in humility and love, and to minister to the world through local evangelism and foreign missions.

6/2 (Matthew 3) Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. v. 4

John’s dress and his diet and his message stand in stark contrast to the pleasure seeking spirit in the world. Everything about him challenges the status quo. His message is austere like his dress: “Repent!” Return to God! Pete

6/1 (Malachi 4) But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the LORD of hosts. v. 2-3

Malachi’s uses a metaphor of the sun blazing with such heat that the wicked are turned to ashes. But for the righteous, this sun is a sun of healing, of liberty, of victory. The new found liberty will bring such joy to the righteous, that they will frolic, kick their heels up, like calves let out of their stalls. “Joy unspeakable and full of glory,” Pete

5/31 (Malachi 3) Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the LORD whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.

John the Baptist’s coming was to prepare the way for Jesus. He is the messenger whom Malachi saw. Jesus said of John, “among those born of women, none is greater than John the Baptist.” He also said, “but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” Not greater in terms of works. Greater in the sense of being born of God through Jesus, and thereby a participant in a better covenant. Pete

5/30 (Malachi 2) For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is a messenger of the LORD. But you have turned aside from the way. You have caused many to stumble by your instruction. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the LORD of hosts, and so I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you do not keep my ways but show partiality in your instruction. v. 7-9

Malachi’s writings seem a lot alike the letter of James in the New Testament. James said: “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.” 3:1
Those who give instruction yet fail to keep what the Lord has said become a stumbling block to others, their words and example leading others into rebellion against God. These false teachers will be judged most harshly. Pete

5/29 (Malachi 1) “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you say, “How have you loved us?”
v. 2

Thus begins a rather unpleasant rebuke from God to His people, Israel. However, before we criticize them we would do well to recognize that we do the same thing. We question God’s love for us like whining children who forget, who ignore, all that their parents have provided, when refused their latest demand. We forget, we ignore, our failure to honor God by keeping His commandments. We are incensed when God doesn’t seem to come through for us, but do not own up to our failure to come through for Him. Ouch! Pete

5/28 (Joel 3) But Judah shall be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem to all generations. I will avenge their blood, blood I have not avenged, for the LORD dwells in Zion. v. 21

A passage like this would fuel the hope of the people of Israel for the future. One day we will triumph over all our enemies and be secure, for the LORD will dwell among us.
We have a similar hope, a day of the Lord’s triumph over evil, and of His dwelling in our midst. A triumph that begins in each person’s heart when Jesus is invited in as Lord. A triumph over sin and Satan through the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf. One day the Lord will dwell in Zion. Today, He lives in my heart! Thank You, Jesus! Pete

5/27 (Joel 2) I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you. v. 25

God’s discipline, His actions of judgment against sin and rebellion, are designed to lead to repentance and restoration. He desires to be merciful. Jesus said it like this: “Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matthew 9:13) Pete

5/26 (Joel 1) Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.
v. 14

One of the better known verses in Joel, it is often quoted as a call to prayer in difficult or trying circumstances, or simply as motivation regarding the grace of repentance. Joel 1 sets the stage for a coming outpouring of the Holy Spirit that will transcend the destruction that is at hand. What should a people do in trying circumstances? Recognize the seriousness of their situation and turn to the LORD. Pete

5/25 (James 5) Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. v. 7-9

Like siblings who tend to bicker with one another when they are alone, we may succumb to the temptation to grumble against our brothers and sisters in Christ when we fail to recognize how imminent is the return of the Lord, and our accountability before Him, for words we have spoken and actions we have taken, that have injured others. 5/24 (James 4) What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
v. 1-3
James explains why we have so many problems with other people. His answer is not pleasant: “It’s our fault.” Imagine going to James and complaining about how people are treating you. Can you guess what he might say? Pete
