Her passion is to provide Christian-based care to this impoverished community through her jewelry sales. Introducing Connie Mertan and Hope Design Ministry
Although she has lived in the United States for more than two decades, as a native of the Central American country of Honduras, Connie Mertan knows the life her fellow Hondurans continue to live in the San Isidro community where she grew up. T
he Evangelical Pentecostal Mount Sinai Church (Iglesia Evangelica Pentecostal Monte Sinai) was the center of the village of El Caulote five miles east of San Isidro and the place where people gathered to celebrate, grieve and pray. It was the heart of the village until 1998 when a mud slide resulting from Hurricane Mitch completely destroyed it and along with this, their sense of community. The People of El Caulote Need A New Church
The people in El Caulote live a simple life. Jobs are hard to find and the area is too poor to provide community services. Most families support themselves by farming, working in the fields and eating what they grow. Buildings in this area are made of cinder block with no insulation or windows and wooden doors. The floors are mud and most families gather at a central well or nearby river to get water. There is no electricity and wood stoves provide heat. Candles are used for light. There is no indoor plumbing. Connie’s goal is to rebuild their sense of community by giving the people of El Caulote a place to gather, celebrate and worship. This requires a new church building, providing shelter from the rain, heat and cold. Connie also wants El Caulote to have clean running water and electricity. Medical services would be a tremendous blessing. Cauple ways you can Help? Connie created Hope Design Ministry to support the San Isidro community and the drive to build a church. This is a big goal that can’t be done by one person. Her passion is to provide Christian-based care to this impoverished community through her jewelry sales and through your financial support, we also collect school suplies and clothing.
