Volunteer Sunday was a rip-roaring success!

It is always great to give our volunteer groups, including UU the Vote, CUUPS, The Arts Committee, RE Families, and the Rainbow Network, a moment to share what they're all about with the broader First U community.

Big shout-out to our Sunday volunteers, including the ushers, Hospitality & Inclusion Greeters, Welcome Table volunteers, the coffee crew, the Sound & Video crew, our Virtual Service tech, and our Family Ministry volunteers, who ensure that Sunday mornings are friendly and welcoming to everyone.

And a special shout-out to our reliable, resourceful, and wonderful office volunteers, Catherine Hogan, Cheryl Romanek, Elly Van Mil, Nina Stephenson, and Viv Bakula, who bring joy to the office each and every week and keep the ship afloat!

A salute to volunteers everywhere!

Fascinating talk by animator / illustrator Rex Barron at that last Friday Painters Group gathering. Barron spent 11 years (’78-’89) as a character layout and background artist for Hanna-Barbera, Filmation, and other Los Angeles animation studios.

"Coming up with a satisfying figurative composition that addresses a storytelling problem remains for me a worthy task. To that end I try to work out of my head as much as possible, and rely on photos only when necessary, even in this age of digital information. The goal, then is to make images that will stay with the viewer." - Rex Barron

ABOUT THE THE FRIDAY PAINTERS GROUP

In 1996 two members of the church — Eleanor Bailey and Rod Groves — started painting together once a week and invited other artists and members of the Church to join them. The response was beyond expectations and soon led to a request for recognition as a Church-sponsored group. The church agreed and the Friday Painters Group was born.

Friday Painters has always had a core group who belong to the church and their loyalty and commitment — and the excellent facilities the Church has to offer — make the group an attractive venue for enthusiastic artists.

Though broad in its membership the Group is quite unitarian in its philosophy. It has no "creedal (media) restrictions," is dedicated to individual creativity, and makes few financial or organizational demands on its participants!

The Friday Painters Group continues to be open on a "space-available basis" to interested artists and Church members.

Your First U Membership Committee was at the UNM Welcome Back Days this week!

We enjoyed talking to students, connecting with UNM organizations, and chatting with fellow UUs on campus! A huge thank you to Dr. Laura Gutierrez-Spencer for helping make this happen! We hope to be on campus again in the spring. We will be tabling at CNM in September!

Our final workshop with Rev. Jake Morrill drew an enthusiastic gathering of First U members. Much progress was made towards drafting our vision and mission statements thanks to the creative and heartfelt input of the participants, and of course to Rev. Morrill's sage facilitation.

The response to the Vision and Mission outreach activities has been overwhelming, with over 2,000 responses to their survey and other activities.

Now the Vision and Mission Task Force will be processing the significant input from the First U community and will further refine the draft vision and mission statements.

** First Friday ArtsCrawl at First U **

Mark your calendar for Friday, August 7, for the city-wide First Friday ArtsCrawl. Stop by the Social Hall from 5 to 8 p.m. to see the current “From Tour of Duty to Tour of Beauty” exhibition. Pass the word to your neighbors, friends, and family, or bring them along.

The exhibition features the artwork of New Mexico Veterans Art group members. This wide-ranging show includes artworks in various media and subject matter.

Signage will be displayed to direct visitors to parking and to the church Social Hall. Refreshments will be served. Don’t miss it!
