The Sin of Achan warns us that even seemingly hidden and private sins often have deep negative impacts on the wider community. The story may make us cry "foul" to God that it is unfair how often the innocent suffer for the crimes of the guilty. But our grounds for complaining are taken away when we realize that God also, ultimately, will let us share in the heavenly rewards for righteousness not our own, but wholly Jesus'. Life is unfair, but so is grace. In the end, we are far better off that life is not fair; we are treated better than we deserve.

In Joshua 7, we see a man from the tribe of Judah who would seemingly rather see punishment for his sin fall on his own family than own up to his guilt. It points us forward in longing to another man who will come from the tribe of Judah, Jesus, who despite being sinless, would rather take our punishment upon himself than to see us suffer.

Join us this Sunday at 11 a.m. for a special cultural experience as we celebrate Reformation Sunday and the Kirkin' O' the Tartans. There will be bagpipes, tartan clan flags, shortbread, and c***r. You might even see someone dressed in a kilt.

There are times where it just seems like we are walking in circles or spinning our wheels, where despite our efforts we are making no progress. At such times it is easy to want to give up. But the story of Jericho reminds us that you never know when you might be on the verge of a breakthrough. If we just keep going, keep walking, we do not know if God might suddenly bless our efforts and our perseverance.

When Jesus told the chief priests and pharisees that the tax collectors and the pr******tes were going into the kingdom of God ahead of them, they were shocked to hear this. And yet they should have been familiar with how, way back in Joshua 2, the pr******te Rahab demonstrated more faith than the majority of Israel. Her unexpected faith and courage saved the lives of many and set in motion events that would lead to the birth of Jesus, and thus the salvation of the very world.
