"Peace is not the product of terror or fear.
Peace is not the silence of cemeteries.
Peace is not the silent result of violent repression.
Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all.
Peace is dynamism.
Peace is generosity." - Archbishop Oscar Romero, killed by graduates of the U.S. Army School of the Americas (March 24, 1980). Oscar Romero! Presente!

Our dear friend Walt Chura died on Sunday, January 18th. Walt touched many of us with his insights, prayerfulness, generosity and bad puns. He was a lover of books, contemplation, St. Francis of Assisi, the Shakers, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, and a cold beer. In 1976, Walt and friends began Simple Gifts, a Catholic Worker bookshop in Albany, NY. Twenty years later, Walt co-founded Emmaus House (the Albany Catholic Worker Community). Celebrate Walt's life on Friday, January 30th. Wake: 10am to 11:30am at Brendese Funeral Home, Waterford, NY https://www.brendesefuneralhome.com/
12 Noon funeral service at St. Mary's Church, 119 Broad Street, Waterford, New York 12188.

Happy Three Kings Day! During the Feast of Epiphany, we recall wise ones offering gifts to baby Jesus. We appreciate our Catholic Worker community members who donated Epiphany toys and games for 120 children, many of whom belong to immigrant families. Thank you for your generosity!

On January 3, we gathered to say “Welcome Home” to two members of the Bakhtani family, who had been kidnapped/detained by ICE officers after leaving Morning Prayer at their mosque. We pray and work with others to release the other two family members. As people of faith, we are called to welcome immigrants: our neighbors, our friends, our coworkers, our students, our friends.

During today’s winter solstice, we reflect on how we are empowered by light to promote justice, compassion and peace. Blessings to all observing Advent, Hanukkah, and Solstice. May we all be a light for others. Thanks to all who share their light with families we assist through our Albany Catholic Worker community.

Happy Feast of Saint Nicholas! Here is an icon of Saint Nick, gifted to Emmaus House by an immigrant family who lived with us for more than a year. The parents, of Ukrainian and Russian descent, created this beautiful image: Mom painted (or “wrote”) the icon image and Dad created the wooden frame. They appreciated the gift of our Catholic Worker community. May we all share our gifts with one another.

Today is the 45th anniversary of the murders of Sr. Dorothy Kazel, O.S.U., Sr. Ita Ford, M.M., Sr. Maura Clarke, M.M., and Jean Donovan. They were brutally r***d and killed in El Salvador by soldiers carrying out their government’s orders. Over 70,000 people were killed during their civil war (1980 to 1992). Some of these solders studied at the U.S. Army School of the Americas. During this Advent season: May we turn our swords into plowshares and study war no more.
