Thus goes the opening verse of one of my favorite hymns and I dare say one of the favorite hymns of Christendom.
I have always been captivated by the old rugged cross. When I was a boy of about 11 years old, I made an old rugged type of cross out of a small sapling I cut down with my axe. I whittled it with my knife, fitted the pieces together, and tied them with some twine. Then I varnished that old rugged cross. For years it hung on the patio of the home I grew up in. Then my parents had it hanging in their family room in West Virginia. Now it is on a shelf somewhere in the storage container behind our house.
Itโs amazing isnโt it, to think that Jesus would leave all the glory of Heaven to come and die here in this world on an old rugged cross. What would move Him to do such a thing? Well Jesus answered that question Himself when He said,
Love was the reason Jesus was willing to bare all the pain, all the humiliation, all the scorn, the betrayal, and death itself. Love moved Jesus to be nailed to that old rugged cross.
If you ever wonder if you are loved you have to do no more than look at a cross and no that you are so very, very, deeply loved.
