This afternoon after the 11 am Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Cairo, we presented Fr. Jay Atherton, the pastor of all of the Catholic Churches in Greene County and of Ravena a commendation from our Legislature. On behalf of the 47,000 residents of Greene County, we thank Fr. Jay for his pastoral leadership and service to our residents. He first became Pastor of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Church in Windham in 2013 and then 3 months later was assigned to serve in Palenville and Haines Falls. Then in July 2021 he became pastor of the churches in Cairo, East Durham and Greenville. Later that year he was assigned parishes Coxsackie and Ravena and then in 2022 was assigned the parishes in Catskill and Athens. This was a monumental task and now he will be serving as Rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany and Parochial Vicar of Historic St. Mary’s Church in Albany. Many blessings to Fr. Jay in his new ministry and many prayers for the Catholic communities throughout our county.
