Update 5-26-2022 6:30 a.m.

Dr Howard came in after I got here today and explained the surgery to Ken and what they were able to do, what they couldn’t do, and what they might need to do down the road (try to stint the other arteries and repair or replace aortic valve). But anything they do in the future would have to be done through a less invasive manner than open heart surgery.
The Anesthesiologist also came to check on him this morning. He said Ken did have a reaction during surgery to a couple of the medicines but nothing like last week. It just turned his skin red…but they treated him for that last night and he’s not having a problem with that today.
They said PT would come today and he would walk some.
He is sitting in a chair. They took the ventilator off around mid-night and the nurse said they had removed several other things.
The doctor said he was pleasantly surprised when he walked in. He said he didn’t expect him to be looking this good or doing as well as he is doing after that major of a surgery.
God is Good!!

Update 10:44 p.m. 5-25-22

I just called and talked to Ken’s nurse again. She said all his vitals were about the same as when I last spoke with her. He is still on the ventilator but she said she has been able to cut down the settings a little lower than they were at 8:30 pm. She hopes in a few more hours to have him off the ventilator. So all in all he is still doing well. I will not call again tonight as I need to sleep but I will update again In the morning when I get to the hospital and have a chance to see how he is doing.

8:44 p.m. update:

I just called the hospital to check on Ken and I talked to the main nurse who is taking care of him. She said he is still holding his own. His oxygen is still holding steady and his BP is still pretty good. She said they usually like to get them off the ventilator by about 6 hours after surgery if possible and she said she has started trying but she is taking it slow because of his bad sleep apnea…..she said she didn’t want to cause any problems with his oxygen levels. But she thinks he will probably be off by the time I see him in the morning if they don’t run into any issues tonight. She also mentioned that he was trying to wake up a little and he was handling it all fairly well…his hands are tied down so he won’t try to pull out the ventilator tube …but she said so far he had remained pretty calm when he came to…he can’t stay awake yet because there is still a good bit of medicine they are giving him that makes him groggy but by tomorrow morning they hope to have him off the ventilator and sitting in a chair….I will be glad to see that in the morning!!! Praise God!!!
I will update one more time tonight, after I call for another update from the nurse at around 10:30 pm.

Alex and I were able to go in and see Ken. He was still not awake and he is still on the ventilator but his oxygen level was still holding level and the nurses were pleased.
The said his BP was good for what he had been through today. They won’t allow family to stay so we had to leave but I will call back at 8:30 pm and 10:30 pm for updates and I will post those updates on this page as well. Keep praying! We are claiming a total turn around and miraculous healing to take place. What the doctors couldn’t fix GOD CAN!!!

Nurse Practitioner just came out and said prayers are working …he has leveled out right now and things are looking better. He is even trying to wake up but they are going to give him something to help him sleep so he won’t react to the pain. God is good! Keep praying!!!

We still haven’t been able to see him. The nurse practitioner for Dr Howard just came to talk to us and said he is very very critical. Having problems with keeping him oxygenated. He is on the ventilator but they are having to stop that and use a bag and when they get his oxygen back to a good level they start him back on the ventilator…but his numbers go back down fast. The NP said he has a room full of people working with him right now. Just pray things improve !!!

After surgery update :

Not exactly the report we wanted but here it is….

The doctor said Ken’s heart was covered in scares and looked like he had surgery before. He said the heart sack was so inflamed it was the worst he had ever seen.
He was only able to do one bypass because the other arteries were buried in the scars. But the bypass that he did was the most important one so hopefully that will help. He sent samples of the scar tissue to pathology.
He was able to replace the Mitral valve but wasn’t able to replace the aortic valve because of the scarring.
He had to cut out part of the heart sack because the heart was so swollen and it was so constricted. He cut out some of the scar tissue on the heart to also help with the swelling.
He put in a temporary pacemaker that will be removed in a few days.
He was not able to do the maze procedure or the clamp on the sack because of the scarring.
He said it wasn’t the most rewarding procedure he had ever done because he wasn’t able to correct everything that was wrong, and they found things they weren’t expecting….but his heart was beating good and he was alive. Dr Howard said he was putting in his notes that Ken could never have open heart surgery again.

Update: 10:10 a.m.

Just got the call that they have him on the heart/lung bypass machine. The nurse that called said everything was going well so far. Next call I will get will be when they take him off the bypass machine and start his heart beating again.
