It is easy to get swept up in the endless debates about technology, ethics, and politics. But every single one of these conversations hinges on a much deeper, theological foundation. If we do not first understand that men and women are created in the image of God, we will not be able to accurately navigate the ethical questions of our day. The most important question sitting underneath our culture's modern debates is fundamentally an anthropological one.

While science and philosophy spend countless hours trying to figure out what consciousness is, they often miss the most important question. The real mystery is figuring out who is actually having the experience. Information processing in the brain doesn't equal a person, knowledge belongs to a someone who believes, doubts, reasons, and loves.

Why do we hunger for meaning, construct rituals, and experience beauty as though it tells us something profound about reality? Materialism claims that these desires are simply products of biological organisms and evolutionary history, just glitches or accidents. But Christianity makes a much better claim: perhaps these deep hungers aren't accidents at all. Perhaps they tell us something fundamental about the kind of spiritual beings we actually are.

The 21st century is putting anthropology back on the table. If a machine can mimic our output, our definition of humanity must go much deeper. The strangest thing in the universe isn't a black hole or even AI, it's the fact that there is a conscious person behind your eyes actually experiencing the world. You don't just process wavelengths; you see a sunset.

Science can explain how the brain processes information, but it cannot explain why that processing is accompanied by actual, subjective experience.
