This Shabbat, we begin our journey toward the High Holy Days. On Friday evening, come pray with Rabbi and me in our sanctuary as we enter our weekend of rest together and begin looking ahead to our holiest days. Then, on Saturday evening, we gather for Selichot, a special service that marks the beginning of our spiritual preparation for the High Holy Days.
Selichot is the moment when we begin to turn our hearts toward Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The word selichot means “forgiveness,” and these prayers invite us to pause, reflect on the past year, and prepare ourselves for the year ahead. One of the beautiful musical traditions of this season is Psalm 27, which we recite throughout the month of Elul and during the High Holy Days. Achat Sha’alti — “One thing I ask of You, Adonai” — reminds us of our deepest longing to draw closer to God and to remain connected to what is sacred.
There is something particularly powerful about hearing and singing these melodies at this time of year. During this special service, I am excited to be joined on the bimah by our staff member and gorgeous alto, Leslie Frye, along with Raquel Teare on piano. Selichot gives us a chance to prepare our hearts and souls for the High Holy Days, allowing the beauty of music and prayer to open us to the sacred season ahead. And, as a fitting conclusion to the service, you will hear the sound of the shofar, calling us to awaken and prepare.
Come join us Saturday evening:
7:30 PM – Wine and dessert reception in the Mishkan, followed by Havdalah
8:00 PM – Selichot service in the sanctuary
