During yesterday’s sermon, we talked about how those who are saved by Jesus are also sent on a mission by him.
We don’t merely exist to fill a seat in a service. Rather, God equips us to do ministry, which includes encouraging other believers and evangelizing those that are still living in darkness.
Here are SIX ways we can partner with him in his mission:
1. By living as ACCEPTABLE OFFERINGS.
Before we can begin talking about helping others, we need to start by asking this simple question: Am I living for God? The Bible teaches that true worship is a life fully-surrendered to God, so before I go out to help others I should make sure I’m pursuing Jesus with my life!
2. By being FAITHFUL PRIESTS.
Peter (an apostle of Jesus) says that followers of Jesus are a “royal priesthood” whose job is to “declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9 NIV). Are we doing that? Are we speaking of God’s blessings to those around us? Are we encouraging others with the scriptures? Are we sharing the good news of Jesus with those in need of hope?
3. By SEEKING THE LOST.
Paul made it his ambition to share the gospel in regions where people had never heard the gospel before. While we may never travel around the world to some remote tribe where people have never heard of Jesus, we can certainly bring Jesus to the unreached people in our workplaces, schools, and homes! Jesus didn’t wait for us to come to him; he came to us, and we are called to do the same.
4. By SUPPORTING those who are called to gospel ministry.
In a sense we’re all involved in gospel ministry, but some are called to devote more of their time and energy to the preaching and teaching of the word. Pastors, missionaries, and evangelists best serve the church and the world by being able to devote more of their time to their ministry, and that is only possible when people support them financially.
5. By LOVING our brothers and sisters in need.
Caring for the poor has always been a foundational practice of the Christian faith. The scriptures teach that Jesus “became poor” for our sake so that we “through his poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9 NIV). If Jesus did that for us, should we not make sacrifices for each other? And knowing that we should care for the poor in general is one thing, but combine that with Christ’s command to “love one another” (John 13:34 NIV) and we can clearly see why it’s so important that we support our Christian brothers and sisters.
6. By PRAYING for those on the front lines.
We have a tendency to let spiritual authorities pray for us, but how often do we pray for them? Paul asked the believers in Rome to join him in his struggles by agonizing with him in prayer (Romans 15:30 NIV). If Paul, an apostle, needed prayer from everyday believers, how much more do our pastors, missionaries, and others leaders need our prayers?
