🌟 **Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross** 🌟

Today, we celebrate one of the Church's most profound mysteries - how an instrument of suffering became our source of salvation. The Cross, once a symbol of shame and death, has been transformed into the ultimate sign of God's love for humanity.

Through Christ's sacrifice, what the world saw as defeat became our victory. What appeared as an ending became our new beginning. The Cross stands as eternal proof that God can transform our darkest moments into sources of light and hope.

*"But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world."* - Galatians 6:14

On this holy day, let us remember that every cross we carry in our own lives - every struggle, every pain, every sacrifice - can become a participation in Christ's redemptive love when united to His Cross.

May we never be ashamed of the Cross, but rather glory in it as our path to eternal life.

Prayers of strength for and the Kirk family on the huge cross she now bares to carry. ♥️🙏♥️

Did you know the Catholic Church has a Bishop of the Moon? ✨🌙

When Apollo 11 launched from Cape Canaveral in 1969, Bishop William Donald Borders of Orlando became something extraordinary - the first (and only!) Bishop of the Moon! 🚀

Here's the amazing story: The 1917 Code of Canon Law included a provision that any newly discovered territory would fall under the jurisdiction of the diocese from which the expedition originated. Since NASA's historic moon mission launched from Cape Canaveral - right in the Diocese of Orlando - the lunar surface technically became part of Bishop Borders' pastoral territory!

That means his diocese expanded from central Florida to include 14.6 million square miles of lunar landscape!

Bishop Borders even mentioned this quirky canonical claim to Pope Paul VI, who was reportedly quite surprised by this unexpected extension of diocesan boundaries into space!

While it's more of a charming footnote than active ministry, it reminds us that the Church's mission knows no earthly bounds. Whether on Earth or among the stars, Christ's love reaches everywhere!

"The heavens declare the glory of God" - Psalm 19:1 ⭐

In Solidarity with Gaza’s Holy Family Catholic Parish

From our hearts rooted in faith, we grieve with Gaza today.

This morning, an Israeli tank shell struck Holy Family Catholic Church, the only Catholic parish in Gaza, where hundreds of Christians and others, elderly, children, and persons with disabilities—had sought refuge. Pope Leo XIV’s urgent nightly calls to this sacred place were a beacon of hope throughout this war.

Tragically, three innocent lives were lost. Among the wounded was the beloved pastor, Fr. Gabriel Romanelli is now recovering from a leg injury.

🛐 As Catholics:

We affirm the sanctity of churches as inviolable places of worship and sanctuary.

We decry the violence that has struck a house of God, a spiritual haven, and a humanitarian shelter.

We echo Pope Leo’s plea: "immediate ceasefire, genuine dialogue, lasting peace."

In solidarity of Christ’s love, we pray:

For the souls of the deceased, they may rest in God’s eternal embrace.

For healing of the injured, especially Fr. Romanelli and those sheltering within the parish.

The global Catholic community unites in advocating for the protection of all civilians and sacred sites.

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.

We celebrate the liturgical feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary on January 1st, which is the Octave of Christmas. Only Christmas and Easter enjoy the privilege of an octave, which is an eight day extension of the feast. The honoring of Mary as the Mother of God can be traced back to the Council of Ephesus in 431. By the 7th century, January 1st was observed as a celebration of the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the 13th century, the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ had come to replace the feast honoring Mary; however in 1751, after a push in Portugal for an official feast day celebrating Mary’s divine maternity, Pope Benedict XIV allowed Portugal’s churches to devote a feast to Mary on the first Sunday in May. Eventually, the feast extended to other countries, and in 1914, it began to be observed on October 11. In 1931, Pope Pius XI extended the feast to the entire church, and in 1974, Pope Paul VI removed the feast of the Circumcision of Christ from the liturgical calendar and replaced it with the feast of the “Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God”, bringing Mary’s feast day back to the first day of the year.

The feast is a celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus. The title “Mother of God” is a western derivation from the Greek Theotokos, which means “God-bearer”. On this day, we are reminded of the role that the Blessed Virgin played in the plan of our salvation. Through the Holy Spirit, God the Father prepared Mary to be the dwelling place where His Son and His Spirit could dwell among men. Christ’s birth was made possible by Mary’s fiat, or sanctioning of God’s plan with her words, “Be it done to me according to thy word”. Calling Mary “Mother of God” is the highest honor we can give to her. Just as Christmas honors Jesus as the “Prince of Peace”, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God honors Mary as the “Queen of Peace”. New Year’s Day is also designated as the “World Day of Peace”, further acknowledging the role of Mary in our hearts and in our world.

On this, the Sunday within the Octave of , we honor the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.  In honoring them, we also honor all families, big or small.  AIn onoring all families, we honor the family of God, the .
What was it like to live day in and day out in the household of St. Joseph?  What was it like to have Jesus for a son, Mary as a wife and mother, and Joseph as a and ?  Their home would have certainly been a sacred place and a dwelling of true peace and unity. The family home of , Mary, and Joseph would have been, in numerous ways, just like any other home.  They would have related together, talked, had fun, disagreed, worked, eaten, dealt with problems, and encountered everything else that makes up daily family life. Of course, the virtues of Jesus and Mary were perfect, and St. Joseph was a truly “just man.” Therefore, the overriding characteristic of their home would have been love.

But with that said, their family would not have been exempt from daily toil, hurt, and challenges that face most families.  For example, they would have encountered the death of loved ones, St. Joseph most likely passed away prior to Jesus’ public ministry. They would have had to fulfill all daily chores, earn a living, put food on the table, attend gatherings of family and friends and the like.
This is significant because it reveals God’s love for family life.  The Father allowed His Divine Son to live this life and, as a result, elevated family life to a place within the Trinity.  The holiness of the Holy Family reveals to us that every family is invited to share in God’s divine life and to encounter ordinary daily life with grace and virtue.

Reflect today, upon your own family life.  Some families are strong in virtue, ansome struggle with basic communication.  Some are faithful day in and day out, s me are broken and deeply wounded.  No matter the case, know that God wants to enter more deeply into your life just as it is right now.  He desires to give you strength and virtue to live as the Holy Family.  Surrender yourself and your family, this day, and invite the Triune to make your family a holy family.

Happy St. Nicholas Day!

The absence of the “hard facts” of history is not necessarily an obstacle to the popularity of saints, as the devotion to Saint Nicholas shows. Both the Eastern and Western Churches honor him, and it is claimed that after the Blessed Virgin, he is the saint most pictured by Christian artists. And yet, historically, we can pinpoint only the fact that Nicholas was the fourth-century bishop of Myra, a city in Lycia, a province of Asia Minor.

As with many of the saints, however, we are able to capture the relationship which Nicholas had with God through the admiration which Christians have had for him—an admiration expressed in the colorful stories which have been told and retold through the centuries.

Perhaps the best-known story about Nicholas concerns his charity toward a poor man who was unable to provide dowries for his three daughters of marriageable age. Rather than see them forced into prostitution, Nicholas secretly tossed a bag of gold through the poor man’s window on three separate occasions, thus enabling the daughters to be married. Over the centuries, this particular legend evolved into the custom of gift-giving on the saint’s feast. In the English-speaking countries, Saint Nicholas became, by a twist of the tongue, Santa Claus—further expanding the example of generosity portrayed by this holy bishop.

The critical eye of modern history makes us take a deeper look at the legends surrounding Saint Nicholas. But perhaps we can utilize the lesson taught by his legendary charity, look deeper at our approach to material goods in the Christmas season and seek ways to extend our sharing to those in real need.

Saint Nicholas is the Patron Saint of:
