Pride And Arrogance Come To Ruin
Each year on the farm, we would buy day-old chicks — 150 of them. Three large boxes with fifty female chicks in each would be delivered to the farm by a transport truck. The chicks rode in the cab to keep them from getting a chill. For every 50 chicks, the supplier would put in one extra chick. These tiny chicks spent their days under the brooder, except to come out for feed and water. It was very important to make sure that the temperature was warm enough, or they would smother one another trying to get to the heat.

One year, we got two roosters amongst the free ones. One was a beautiful, pure white bird. The other was an absolutely gorgeous bird. Every colour that God had ever put on a rooster was on this second bird.

In the fall, we cleaned and disinfected the henhouse. On a designated evening as it was getting dark, we would catch and carry the young chickens to the henhouse.

Difficulties started to appear in the henhouse. When I went to feed grain and water, Mr. Gorgeous was hard to find. When I looked under the rows of nests, there he was, cowering in the back corner, afraid to come out. I knew that he would die if I did not rescue him from the white rooster, who had made himself "The Boss".

I called Uncle Archie and asked him if he could take this gorgeous rooster to his farm. Absolutely! I caught the rooster using a chicken catcher — a rigid wire with a hook on the end. He went in a box and was transported to his new home.

The white rooster became so mean and arrogant that he would attack anyone going in to feed the chickens and gather eggs. Sadly, it became too dangerous to keep him, so we had to shorten The Boss's lifespan.
Proverbs 16:18 – Pride goes before destruction, haughtiness before a fall. (NLT)

James 4:6b-7a – God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. So humble yourselves before God. (NLT)

We should have the same attitude as God's Son Jesus, who humbled Himself to die for us on Calvary.

Philippians 2:5-11 – In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (NIV 2011)

Do we give the air of knowing it all, or do we help others to feel at ease when they talk to us?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to live our lives as an encouragement to others so that our witness and testimony inspire others to see Christ in our lives. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Verse of the Day for Friday, August 14, 2020:
Thoughts on Today's Verse....

In prosperity, God's people left the LORD and followed their own gods and practiced their own morality. Except neither was "their own." The northern tribes of Israel simply became like the pagan people around them — practicing the same detestable immoral lifestyles, forgetting the poor and the alien, cheating the widows and the powerless. God wanted them to know that he knew what they were doing. The Almighty wanted them to realize that he would act and bring justice. The Sovereign LORD wanted the northern tribes of Israel to realize that they have sown their own destruction, and even though they cannot even fathom its possibility, God made sure it was coming because of their hardness of heart and their refusal to live with character. Their destruction is a great reminder to us that our name of Christian, our claim to be God's chosen people and his holy priesthood (1 Peter 2), ! doesn't matter unless our lives portray his character, our heart displays his compassion, and hands do his will.

My Prayer...

Father, forgive us, for we sin. Father, forgive me, for sinning and looking the other way at social, judicial, and racial injustice. Empower me, dear LORD, empower us, to truly be your Holy Nation, bound together by our faith in Jesus and not by our race, age, nationality, political preferences, or social economic status, connected by our praise of your glory and exemplifying to the hate-filled world the grace that comes from knowing you as our Father. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

The Encounter

It was such a lovely day, so I decided to take the dogs for a run. I loaded my three-year-old granddaughter into the stroller, gathered up the dogs, and away we went. As we were walking, Ade asked several times if we could go down to the lake. A grizzly had been sighted in that area a few weeks before, but there had been no further reports, so I agreed.

At the beach, I had a good look around but saw nothing, so I gave her the okay to head for the water. The dogs went with her. I sat myself down on a big log to watch. It was then that I looked over to my right and saw the grizzly approximately 200 feet away. It had just come out of some bushes and stood watching us.

It was downwind of us, so it had obviously smelled us, but had gone undetected by the dogs. I immediately told Ade that the grizzly bear was here and that she must come now!

Even though she did not see the bear, Ade responded quickly, though at any other time there would have been crying and an argument. The dogs came, too, even though I did not speak to them. The bear was still standing watching. I moved away at a steady but calm pace until the bear was out of sight, and then, I ran as fast as my legs would carry me!

We will not be heading to that area of the shore again this summer. The bear had obviously staked out its stomping ground, and not to flee would have been nothing short of foolish.

This encounter drew my thoughts to the following Scriptures:

2 Timothy 2:22 – Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (NIV)

1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (NIV)

When temptation sidles up beside us, if we want to move through the situation safely, we must flee as God instructs, and He will provide a way out. So, look for it, and take it.

Temptation, in whatever form it takes, is not something to trifle with — not if we value the pursuit of righteousness, faith, love, and peace.

So today, when we encounter the bear of temptation in our lives, may we each calmly but firmly and quickly put the truth of God's Word into action, and flee.

Prayer: Father God, in the face of temptation, thank You that You provide sound advice as to how to proceed the minute that we encounter it. Bless each of us with strength and determination to follow Your advice, that we might be safe from the danger of sin and all the consequences of it. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.

Consult The Lord
There was a time when I wanted to do a business transaction with a stranger, and this particular deal involved a large amount of money. So, I quickly consulted one of my mentors about my plan, and he said, "Let's ask the Lord about it before you commence."

We prayed, and afterward, he said, "I think the Lord is saying that the man you are about to deal with is a fraud." So, I held my peace.

A few weeks later, the person who had given me the contact of my potential business partner called me to ask if I had done business with the man. I answered "No," and she said, "Thank God! Please don't. I just found out that he is a fraud."

In studying the life of David, both before and after he became king, one would discover that he never made any move without first consulting God.

2 Samuel 2:1 – After this, David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said to him, Go up. David said, To which shall I go up? And He said, To Hebron. (AMPC)

So, it is little wonder why he recorded a series of victories against the Philistines and the Amalekites, and why he was able to escape Saul's wrath with ease.

In 1 Samuel, chapter 30, the Amalekites invaded David's town, Ziklag, destroyed the houses of him and his men, stole their property, and abducted their families. Yet he didn't just jump on his horse and give command to his troops to pursue his enemies. Rather he inquired of the Lord what to do in the midst of his sorrows, and the Lord answered him and gave him victory.

1 Samuel 30:8 – And David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them? The Lord answered him, Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all. (AMPC)

When we consult God concerning our every move, we are much less likely to make mistakes, and we will always be victorious.

Christ also knew that this was very important, so very early in the morning, He would go and consult the Father concerning each day.

Mark 1:35 – And in the morning, long before daylight, He got up and went out to a deserted place, and there He prayed. (AMPC)

As believers, it's not God's will that we should make decisions on our own, because God knows that we can't be perfect enough to know exactly what is best for us. We must let God lead us, "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God." (Romans 8:14 AMPC)

Proverbs 3:5 – Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. (AMPC)

Talk to the Lord concerning that move and plan of yours today: your travelling, marriage proposal, business, etc., and He will give you victory in Jesus' name. Pray with me:

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for this day. I commit my life and future into Your able hands. Please direct me and give me victory all round. I come against every error in my plans, and I claim Your victory in Jesus' name. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

After stumbling around in the dark watering my yard last night, I was overjoyed to find a flashlight so I wouldn't meet any unexpected "critters" as I reached into the shrubbery to turn my faucet on and off. My joy, however, is far greater at finding Jesus, who illuminates my heart on my darkest nights, illuminates my future with his coming glory, illuminates my path with his words of truth, and illuminates my hope with the dawning of each Sunday, my weekly reminder of his triumph over the grave.
My Prayer...

Father, dear precious and holy God, how can I ever thank you enough for the light of my life? Until my face reflects the light of your glory, Jesus will light my way. Thank you. In the name of Jesus, the Light of the world, I praise and thank you. Amen.

Promise Keeper

1 Samuel 20:17 – And Jonathan made David reaffirm his vow of friendship again, for Jonathan loved David as he loved himself. (NLT)

He made a promise to his best friend, but now his friend lay dead on a mountaintop.

Davey and Johnny were best buds and had been since they were young. Davey's family farmed while Johnny's came from the upper class. Despite their cultural differences, Davey and Johnny managed to maintain their friendship.

Johnny's dad, however, was leery of Davey. Though Davey came from the lower class, he saw potential in him — potential that might carry him far in life. So, he gave him a job at his company — but with ulterior motives. He thought that Davey's sharp mind might help his company move forward.

As Johnny's dad aged, he arranged for Johnny to take over the company after his retirement or death. Johnny had no interest in the company and secretly wanted Davey to run the business. He even made Davey promise to care for his family if something happened to him. (He seemed to have eerie premonitions.)

Johnny's premonition materialized. He and his father were tragically killed while on the way to negotiate with a firm that was their staunchest competitor. Davey kept his promise, though, ran the business, and even cared for Johnny's disabled son.

The point of this modern take on the story of David and Jonathan is that although David could have forgotten his promise and pursued his own interest in life, instead, he chose to honour his friend by keeping his word.

Being as good as my word is a high goal to reach for — but a worthy one. A person's word was once enough — perhaps with a handshake to follow — but not any more. Even though we live in an age of paperwork that protects me and the one I'm making a promise to, my word should be just as good as if there were no paperwork. My promises should not be made lightly.

Breaking a promise should never enter my mind. Only under extenuating circumstances and unusual conditions should I renege on my word. Carrying out my word is important even if it inconveniences me. Taking care of Jonathan's disabled son certainly inconvenienced David.

Perhaps more than anything else, keeping my promises provides an example of my faithfulness to God. When I'm as serious about keeping my promises to God, as He is about keeping His to me, I'll find it easier to keep my word to others.

When you give your word, keep your word.

Prayer: Father, help us understand how important it is to keep our word to others. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse....

The Holy Spirit doesn't just empower us now. He is our guarantee (2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5) and our assurance that we will see God face to face (1 John 3:1-2) and share in his glory (Colossians 3:1-4). He is alive in us and promises us life that never will end.

My Prayer...

O God and Father of all nations and races, thank you for your guarantee that you will work in my life through the Holy Spirit and raise me up by your Spirit's power to join you in your presence. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse....

Forgiveness is wonderful if it leads to life change. Jesus came to call us from sin, into his presence, and for his good pleasure. He gave us grace but is also gracious enough to not leave us in sin!

My Prayer...

O LORD my God, holy in all your ways, please transform my heart and my life into your holy will. Give me the assurance of forgiveness and the courage to leave my sin behind. In Jesus' name I ask you for your gracious and unlimited power to mold my heart and my life into a clearer reflection of you. Amen.

Naming The Snakes

Psalm 119:133 – Establish my steps and direct them by [means of] your word; let not any iniquity have dominion over me. (AMPC)

"BE AWARE OF RATTLESNAKES AND POISON IVY!" reads a warning about hiking in the Nez-Perce Clearwater National Forest in Idaho, USA.

Such a sign didn't exist when I went skipping ahead of my family on a sunny morning across the ancient lava flats high above the Clearwater River among the cedars and cottonwoods. There were plenty of elk, moose, cougars, and bears, but back then, only the occasional faraway ranger.

Suddenly, my father shoved me aside, shouldered his .22 rifle and fired point blank into the very next place that I would've stepped. A rattlesnake, coiled to strike, had just raised its head when that shot's BLAM! BLAM! rang out over the river valley, bouncing off the cliffs. With no first aid to be had, if I'd been bitten, I would've died there in the wilderness.

Remembering this story reminded me of the danger that I risked when I allowed such snakes into my life: smoking (but I know it isn't good for me), overeating (which has been called su***de by knife and fork), mindless television (when I could be about God's business), resentments (they did me wrong!), and drugs (the list of our own personal snakes marches on). Taking these snakelike sins away forever is what God's mercy is all about.

Life is a gift (which is, of course, why we call it the present). We unwrap it through our thoughts and actions. When that unwrapping is a daily prayer to be rid of anything that blocks us from the sunlight of God's Spirit, then what we should be doing and where we should be going becomes a lot clearer. John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress names some of the snakes that strike all of us at some time or another: pride, selfishness, anger, willful blindness, arrogance, stupidity, and cowardice — to name a few.

Without willingness to be rid of them, our life-snakes multiply and lead to death. But when we ask for God's forgiveness and help, the path that we travel becomes snake-free, letting us journey in freedom, happiness, and joy.

May we let God make such a change in us that we may model snake-free living to others, allowing them to seek to join us on the journey.

Psalm 37:23 – The steps of a [good] man are directed and established by the Lord when He delights in his way [and He busies Himself with his every step]. (AMPC)

Prayer: O Father God, keep us travelling along with You, through both the good and the bad corners of this world. We need Your presence every passing hour. Who but Yourself, our Guide and Friend can be? Abide with us, we pray, in Jesus' name. Amen.

God As Creator
Psalm 19:1 – The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. (NIV)

"Oh, God," I sigh, "You must have had so much fun creating our world!" I'm driving to my summer home in the White Mountains of Arizona, USA. The road starts in the heat of the Phoenix, Arizona, desert, winds through wonderful, weird rock formations, then transitions through every possible type of vegetation until travellers arrive in the cool shade of tall pine forests graced by summer wildflowers. It's an incredible drive with not a freeway in sight, a perfect opportunity to worship God as I drive.

I don't mean that I worship nature as God. I truly believe that God created our world, and I think that He enjoyed the whole process. How could He not? The variety of scenery in Arizona alone is enough to make one gasp. We visited the Grand Canyon recently, and took in that amazing sight. I like to think of God simply tracing a line in the ground with His mighty finger, angling it here and there for a perfect design, just so that He could display His glory in one more outstanding way.

In his book, Our Great God and Saviour, Eric Alexander states, "The entire created order — 'the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them' — owes its origin to the sovereign decree of God as king of the universe, sitting upon his throne." (p.34)

Jeremiah 32:17 – Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. (NIV)

So, if we believe that He created our wonderful world and if we believe that He is sovereign, then we have to believe the last sentence of the verse, which means that nothing is impossible for Him. This is a challenge, I admit, especially this year in the midst of COVID-19, riots, wildfires, and all the other traumas that headline the news. There are days when I have to yank my thoughts back from the worry that I let creep into my mind over these events.

Psalm 146:6 – God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them — the Lord, who remains faithful forever. (NIV)

Job 38 is an incredible exposition of God's sovereign power in creating and ordering our world, a chapter to read when we need to be reminded of what God did and can do. If we believe in His mighty power and His endless faithfulness and that nothing is too hard for Him, then we should be able to have peace in our hearts, regardless of personal or world events.

Prayer: Father, this world is incredible. You have made such a variety of awesome and wonderful sights for us to enjoy. Help us to worship You as we travel through life, to use the power of creation to remind us of Your power and faithfulness. We know in our minds that nothing is too hard for You. Help us to believe that firmly in our hearts.

Verse of the Day for Saturday, August 8, 2020:

But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do. Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak. — 1 Corinthians

Thoughts on Today's Verse....

We have incredible freedom under grace. However, our freedom never gives us the license to destroy a weak brother or sister's walk with the Lord. Let's use our freedom considerately, especially toward our new brothers and sisters in Christ. These new Christians need our encouragement; they already have enough stumbling blocks!

My Prayer...

God of all grace, please help me to be an encouragement and a good example to new Christians and those who are weak in their faith. Please, help me guard my life from being a bad example to others. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse....

When we find it easy to identify the sin of others, God wants us to be reminded of how important it is for us to take a rigorously honest inventory of our own faithfulness. He wants us to deal with our own sin before we evaluate anyone else.

My Prayer...

Forgive me, Father God, for my sins. Forgive me, especially Father, for the sin of a critical and judgmental spirit. Deliver me from such hurtful and evil habits, forgive me of my sins, and please bless me with faithfulness. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
