Have questions about Griefshare?

Attending a group

Q
Is GriefShare for people with a specific type of loss?

A
GriefShare is for everyone who is grieving the death of a loved one—whether you’ve experienced the loss of a spouse, parent, child (infant, young child, teen, adult, unborn), friend, sibling, coworker, or other relative.

Q
What if I’m not comfortable sharing?

A
That’s perfectly fine! No one is required to talk or share. People usually find that it helps to express their concerns, ask questions, and share their stories, but you are welcome to come and simply listen to others’ experiences and the expert advice from the videos.

Q
I’m not religious. Should I come?

A
Even though GriefShare is based on Christian principles, people from all faiths and even those who are not religious have found hope and healing by attending. The practical advice from counselors, pastors, and healthcare professionals applies to anyone.

Q
What happens during a typical group meeting?

A
Each week you’ll view a 30-minute video on a grief-related topic, featuring valuable insights from counselors, pastors, and others who’ve lost a loved one. Then your group will discuss the video and how it applies to your lives. You’ll also receive a book with helpful tips and exercises for personal support throughout the week.

Q
What if I’m nervous about being with people I don’t know?

A
Your feelings are understandable, but those feelings go away quickly for most people, usually during the first session they attend. People at GriefShare are there because they, too, are looking for help and support in a caring, safe place.

Q
What are the group facilitators like?

A
GriefShare facilitators understand what it’s like to grieve. They want to help you take healthy steps in the right direction and avoid pitfalls. They have a heart to come alongside hurting people and will foster a supportive environment during your time together.

1. External Grief

What it is:
External grief is outwardly expressed grief. These individuals process their pain by talking, sharing emotions, and expressing feelings openly.

Common characteristics:
• Crying easily or frequently
• Talking about their loved one often
• Wanting to share their story in group discussion
• Processing emotions verbally

Strengths:
• Emotions are released rather than bottled up
• Often benefit greatly from group discussion and sharing

Challenges:
• May feel misunderstood or “too emotional”
• Can unintentionally overwhelm internal grievers

Key reminder:
External grievers are not weak; they are grieving out loud.

2. Internal Grief

What it is:
Internal grief is inwardly processed grief. These individuals tend to grieve privately and quietly, often thinking deeply rather than talking.

Common characteristics:
• Limited emotional expression in public
• Processing grief through reflection, journaling, prayer, or solitude
• May listen more than speak in group
• Often appear “strong” or “okay”

Strengths:
• Thoughtful, reflective processing
• Often steady and composed during crises

Challenges:
• Emotions may remain unexpressed for long periods
• Others may assume they are not grieving

Key reminder:
Internal grievers are not cold or detached; they are grieving on the inside.

3. Blended Grief

What it is:
Blended grief is a combination of both external and internal styles. Many people fall into this category and may shift between styles depending on the situation.

Common characteristics:
• Open in some settings, private in others
• May talk freely one week and be quiet the next
• Expression varies with energy level, trust, or season of grief

Strengths:
• Flexible processing style
• Able to relate to both internal and external grievers

Challenges:
• Can feel confused about their own grief style
• Others may misread inconsistency as avoidance or regression

Key reminder:
Grief is not static. A person’s style can change over time.

Why This Matters in GriefShare

• There is no right or wrong way to grieve
• Different expressions of grief deserve equal respect
• Understanding styles reduces comparison, frustration, and judgment

Simple Summary

• External: “I grieve by talking and expressing.”

• Internal: “I grieve by thinking and reflecting.”

• Blended: “I grieve in both ways, depending on the moment.”
