Last Christmas he had Covid and celebrated with his family reading Luke 2 and opening gifts via zoom. Later in the summer, he was hospitalized with multiple broken bones from a car accident. Then he suffered a terrible fall. We could’ve lost him 3 times in the last 12 months, but God isn’t finished with his ministry.

The baby was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. The body was wrapped in linen and laid in a sepulcher. (Luke 2:7, 23:53) With the precision of a physician, Luke writes with the identical sentence structure at the beginning and end of his Gospel.

The Holy Ghost inspired those words for a reason. You cannot separate Christmas from the Cross. This Baby was born to bleed. A humble manger was his cradle but a cruel cross was his murder weapon.

The baby born on a “silent night” suffered a violent death. Jesus is the Lamb slain before the foundations of the world. But the baby didn’t stay in the stable, He grew up. And the body didn’t stay in the tomb, He got up.

He was born once so we can be born twice.

“Those Few Sheep,” We’ve often heard it preached or taught that David’s older brother attempt at embarrassment was minimizing David’s duties. But what if Eliab was telling the truth? What if David’s flock was few? What if he had only a few sheep in his care? No where in Scripture does the Bible state David had thousands of sheep like Jacob or Job. Perhaps a father like Jesse who hesitated to introduce David to the prophet Samuel also delegated David just a few sheep, keeping the boy occupied and out of the way. Yet David sang and played the harp to “those few sheep”. David slew a lion and a bear for “those few sheep”. David led “those few sheep” to green pastures and still waters. Why? Because “those few sheep” mattered. And because David was faithful over “those few sheep” he was made ruler over all of Israel.

Are you faithful to the few? Those few kids showing up for Christmas play practice. Those few music students you teach lessons. Those few members of the choir you direct. Those few employees you pay. Those few nursing home residents you hug. Those few hungry you feed. Those few naked you clothe. Those few orphans you support. Those few soldiers you write. Those few prisoners you visit. Those few sick you pray for. Those few dollars you give. Those few hours you donate. Those few sheep in the Sunday school class you teach. Those few sheep in the congregation you preach. Those few matter.
A few loaves and fishes fed thousands (Matthew 15:34, Mark 8:6). A few eight souls saved mankind in the Ark (1 Peter 3:10). A few with strength made all the difference in Sardis (Revelation 3:4). There are few laborers in the plenteous harvest. Many are called but only a few are chosen. Those few matter. Be faithful to the few.

If you ever feel too talented for the few. If you ever feel too important for the few. If you ever feel too valuable for the few. If you ever feel discouraged with the few. If you ever feel overwhelmed with the few. If you ever feel like giving up over the few. Remember the Good Shepherd, the Great Shepherd, the Chief Shepherd did far more for far less. Jesus didn’t do it for the few. He did it for the one, not the ninety-nine.

The Catch: A Better Vision (Luke 5:4-9)
The Call: A Broader Vocation (Luke 5:10-11)

"And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him." (Luke 5:1-11)

This Valentine’s Day, may you be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth (For God so loved the world), and length (that He gave His only begotten Son) and depth (that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish) and height (but have everlasting life) And to know the love of Christ. (Ephesians 3:18 with John 3:16) How wide is His love? Wide enough for the whole wide world. What is the length of His love? He sent His Son. How deep is His love? Deeper than the deepest sin. It is for whosoever. How high is His love? As high as the Heavens with everlasting life. How much does He love you? He stretched out his arms as if to say I love you this much. He loved you with the Cross.
