Jesus said: "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command."

- John 15:12–14

"Here is someone who knows us like no one else: our weaknesses, our oddities, our lusts, our stubbornness, our self-pity, our struggles, our sensitivities, our deepest shame and guilt. Yet, knowing all this, he still lay down his life for us."

- Chance Faulkner

“The only person who dares wake up a king at 3:00 a.m. for a glass of water is a child. We have that kind of access.”

God created the world out of nothing (Ex Nihilo). Here are a few implications of this reality:

1) Before there was a universe, there was God. Therefore, He transcends both space and time.
2) God is to be worshipped as the Creator. Being the Creator, He alone has the authority to dictate right and wrong among his creatures.
3) While sin subjected creation to brokenness, creation is never inherently evil because it was created by a good God.
4) Since God is distinct from His creation, He can enter a genuinely personal relationship with them by a sacrificial act of love, which He did by sending the Son, Jesus Christ.

Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

The great English Puritan pastor Thomas Watson famously wrote, “Til sin be bitter, Christ will not be sweet.” The hard truth is that the first step toward real gospel joy is gospel brokenness. How can we honestly know the extent of God’s love unless we realize that, left to ourselves, we are dead in sin, His enemies, and destined for destruction? Is this a bitter reality? Yes. However, it is also the doorway to freedom and joy. See, God’s love is most demonstrated in that, despite our hostility toward Him, He sent His Son to receive the punishment we deserved. This is why if one truly desires to know the love of God, one must look to the cross at Calvary, where Jesus paid our ultimate debt so that we might be reconciled to the Father and dwell with Him for eternity.

Romans 5:8 “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
