The Acton Fire and Police Departments invite members of the community to join us in remembering the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Twenty-five years ago, our nation was forever changed.
On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners. Two planes struck the World Trade Center in New York City, one struck the Pentagon, and a fourth, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers courageously fought back against the hijackers.
2,977 innocent people lost their lives, including 343 firefighters and 60 law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the attacks. The tragedy touched communities across the country, including our own. We remember the Acton residents and members of our extended community whose lives were taken that day, and we honor the families, friends, and colleagues who continue to carry their memory.
Twenty-five years later, we gather to remember those we lost, honor those who responded, and reflect upon the courage, sacrifice, and unity that emerged from that terrible day.
We remember. We honor. We will never forget.
