Because We Are Human, Not Machines
Let me start by asking: Have you heard of the Forgetting Curve?
Human memory is inherently fragile. More than a century ago, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus uncovered a sobering truth: without active reinforcement, our memory and skills decay exponentially over time. This phenomenon—the Forgetting Curve—is as relevant today as ever, which reminds me of how it connects to assimilation debt (the core principle of why I build the Gap2Skill ) in the age of AI. As technology accelerates far beyond human cognitive limits, the gap between what we learn and what we retain continues to widen.
Machines, algorithms, and AI models can store petabytes of data, retrieve information instantly, and operate without fatigue. Humans cannot. We forget. Our skills atrophy when unused. Passive exposure never leads to mastery.
This brings us to a critical crossroads in how we coexist with artificial intelligence:
Option 1 vs. Option 2: Passive Automation vs. Active Thinking
When integrating AI into our work and career development, we face two distinct paths:
Option 1: Passive Reliance: Treating AI as an oracle. You input a prompt, accept the output without scrutiny, and let the system do all the cognitive heavy lifting. Over time, your critical thinking weakens, your domain expertise erodes, and you become a passive bystander in your own career.
Option 2: Active Cognition & Human-in-the-Loop: Using AI as an interactive sparring partner. You challenge assumptions, refine context, and remain the decision-maker. AI amplifies your capability, but you retain the cognitive steering wheel.
To thrive in an AI-driven workforce, Option 2 is not optional, it is essential.
Below are two critical practices for professionals, job seekers, and corporate leaders to keep human skills sharp.
Tip 1: Adopt AI, But Retain Active Thinking (Be the Human in the Loop)
AI tools are indispensable, but passive consumption leads to cognitive decay.
Whenever you interact with an LLM or AI system, force it to engage you as an active collaborator. Ask it to challenge your assumptions. Require it to ask clarifying questions. Make it probe your intent before producing answers.
By inserting yourself as the Human in the Loop, AI stops being a crutch and becomes a grindstone that sharpens your thinking.
Tip 2: Upskilling Is Mandatory, Not Optional. Practice Your Target Skills
Human skills decay when left dormant. Upskilling is no longer a periodic milestone; it is a daily commitment.
For Job Seekers: Knowing a concept or reading an AI-generated summary is not enough. You must practice. Simulate real scenarios, solve problems end-to-end, and articulate your reasoning aloud. Interviewers don’t test what your AI knows, they test your instant, practical grasp of the material. Hands-on practice builds the muscle memory needed to handle any unexpected question.
For Corporations & Enterprise Leaders: Automating workflows without upskilling staff creates dangerous single‑point dependencies and hollows out internal talent pipelines. Organizations must invest in continuous learning to ensure employees keep pace with evolving technology and maintain high-level problem-solving capabilities.
Because We Are Human
Machines store and retrieve. Humans analyze, synthesize, and adapt through active engagement.
We cannot change the biological reality of memory decay, but we can choose how we learn.
Embrace AI, but never surrender your active thinking. Practice relentless upskilling. Keep yourself in the loop. Own your growth.
Because we are human, not machines.
