praying/ prayer during work or undertaking a project
Speaking with another brother this morning while on my way to California to be with family for a few days, we both came to the agreement that formation is key here. I would put this at the very top of any discussion regarding prayer during work.
But what do I mean by that?
I find that during work, I will suddenly end up reciting the Our Father or the Hail Mary—they just come to mind out of nowhere. You see, it is a "monk mindset" that causes this. It might not even be a full Psalm or a hymn that pops into my head, but those core prayers just surface.
Why and how does this happen? Formation!
Think of the old acronym GIGO: Garbage In, Garbage Out.
What you do outside of work determines what happens during work. If we spend a lot of our day reciting Scripture and the Psalms, that is what will overflow. Personally, I also tend to listen to music that is uplifting and clean—not just strictly Christian or religious music, but things that feed the soul positively. GIGO.
Ultimately, it comes down to formation: you must form your mind toward God. How do you interact with others and the world around you? Do you foster love? Do you seek Christ in everything holy—and do you even look for Him to redeem what is unholy? What you feed your mind in your off-hours is exactly what your mind will return to when you are on the job.
